Hi,

I just wanted to check that peak fares would not apply on New Year's Day even though it's a Monday? I intend to travel from Bristol Temple Meads to Paddington and upon putting my journey into the journey planner it gives super off-peak fares at all times, but I can't find any confirmation of this in terms and conditions so just wanted to be sure.

Is it normally the case that public holidays are treated like weekends for ticketing all across the network?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

I believe Sundays and Public Holidays (which of course New Years Day is) you will find that Super Off Peak tickets can be used without any time restrictions. This all applies to Off Peak Returns which can also be used on a Saturday without restriction.

Super Off Peak Returns sometimes have restrictions on a Saturday, but sometimes not. It depends on the specific ticket so one would need to check the restriction text.

I know this has been discussed before but anyone taking advantage of cheap off peak fares on New Years Day and indeed on some of the other days between Christmas and New Year, beware of peak parking charges. I was caught out on this a few years ago at Chesterfield when I travelled on a day when Off Peak Fares were valid all day yet I was still charged the high peak time parking fee.

It depends on the specific restriction codes of the ticket desired rather than any sweeping statements. A small number of restriction codes were pointed out here a while ago which state Monday to Friday and make no mention of bank holidays being treated differently.

It is correct.

It is true that sometimes - but not in this case - the electronic restrictions are incorrect (especially for dates far into the future) but if you book a ticket in conjunction with an itinerary (and, where possible, use the train company's own website and obtain a reservation as this is good evidence), the itinerary is confirmation of a contract to travel on the specified service. If the company later changed the data, but you already had a contract, then you should be allowed travel (and if you were not, you should be entitled to compensation).

GWR does indeed lift all time restrictions on Super Off Peak and Off Peak tickets over the Christmas and New Year period (this year Saturday 23rd December - Monday 1st January inclusive).

However they do advise that restrictions may still apply on services operated by other Train Operating Companies.

It depends on the restriction code.

The electronic data may not always match the public description.

My advice to anyone who sees a fare and itinerary they like is to book the ticket with the desired itinerary selected, and obtain reservations if possible.
