This all happened on the A30 near to the Sunningdale Level Crossing. I know that LC well from the past! It was the main road to the south/south-west before the M3 and had a signalbox that operated the wide gates. There used to be huge delays there at times, especially when there were cross-country goods trains from Reading General to Feltham Marshalling Yard. Here is a shot from around 1954:
