Sunderland station sidings

Afternoon,

I was wondering if anyone had any information on the sidings at the south end of Sunderland station? Has anyone witnessed them in use? What is their point?

I pass them almost daily and am yet to see them in use, It's a real shame they cannot accommodate GC reversals as I would imagine they would be most useful.

Additionally I want to share an anecdote from a local councillor who recently told me that the site of Park Lane metro station proved very difficult to excavate as when the old Durham line was severed the site under the car park was by that stage above was heavily backfilled. Interesting, if true of course, how no thought went into the future use of the line.

They are used for turning back metro services terminating at Sunderland. I also believe that when trains terminated at Sunderland from the north (mainly pre 2002) they were used then

Going back to about 1994 Tamper stabling sidings were in place.

Some Northern Rail services on a Sunday terminate at Sunderland but think they normally turn back in the platform. The one Metro service at night that terminates at Sunderland is booked to turn back in platform 2.

Normally they are used if extra services are on for the Sunderland home game and at Christmas when the Pelaw shorts are extended. Only Sidings no.2 is wired so Metro cannot use Sidings no.1. Both an be accssed from any platform at Sunderland.
