Sunderland Station Refurbishment - 2001

I recently stumbled on a bit of footage of the Sunderland Station refurb which took place in 2001. In my opinion they completely wrecked the station when they put the roof on, it's a drab awful place after the refurb. I forgot quite how pleasant it was before hand.

I know we have a few fellow North Easterners on here so hope you enjoy it.

Sunderland Station is a ****hole, and has used the current building since the 60s.

Pleasant? Sunderland? I assume you never experienced a 56 hauled coal train power up in the underground station.

The ststion is much better now than it has been at an point in my lifetime

The below ground platform area is okay, apart from diesel fumes if you get a smokey Pacer or whatever.

It's the 'mall' around the ticket office that's absolutely horrendous, not helped by the rude ticket office that refuses to print TOD and sends you all the way to the other entrance to use what used to be the worst ticket machine on the network. The machine has at least been replaced now. Oh, and there's the perpetually broken escalator.

If they refurbed that main concourse area, put in a Northern ticket machine or two there and got the ticket office to do what ticket offices should do then it would be okay. No more than okay obviously.

Then they would just need to sort out the rest of the city centre.....

I had many a fester at Sunderland back in the 80s. It was a grim station back then, but at least you knew that you would be departing on a set of Mark 1s with something interesting on the front.

This is incorrect. The works you refer to occurred in the mid 1960s and the most recent refurbishment was in 2010 and was a genuine improvement.

Sunderland station was partially open to the elements, over the central section of the platform, following the 1960s rebuild. It was only in 2001 that the station was fully enclosed.
