They don't need painting as that was done by East Coast instead they are getting vinyl's (or even if it is paint it is not necessary to paint them as it has just been done). As far as I can tell the re-liveried sets are no cleaner (or dirtier) than any other set or before they were 'cleaned'.
True, they are vinyl wraps rather than painted. But the point remains the same - VTEC are taking them out of service for re-livery and (allegedly) cleaning, so they brought in sets in to provide cover.

While there may not be a technical need for it, there is a commercial one and it is going to happen.

There won't be an issue, given that VTEC+Connections tickets are valid on the Metro. It'd be foolish of VTEC to lose that.

As for revenue abstraction, VTEC get a lot of Sunderland-London revenue already as most journey options are on VTEC. The only issue is that VTEC's trains run at the same time as Grand Central's most important service so Sunderland don't gain additional journeys but Grand Central will lose customers; just fancy that!

An East Coast set is yet to receive interior works. I'm happy that you agree that a commercial consideration that a train should be red trumps the consideration (commercial or otherwise) that passengers want sockets / more modern interiors.
