Sunderland advice please

My son and I are travelling to the Sunderland area this coming Saturday. We are travelling by car and want to take in the sights of the city. We will be taking photos of any form of transport (trains, metro, buses etc) and will be in the area all day.

Can any kind sole offer advice on parking, locations, things to do or things not to do. My wife work's in a hospice so is very, very careful about Covid issues so we will not be travelling on public transport at all (unfortunately) so all sights need to be accessible (open stations etc)

Any ideas gratefully received, thanks Andy S

Sunderland station is effectively underground, but somewhere round Monkwearmouth Station (as was) would get you trains and Metro.

The main bus station is called Park Lane (this is also a metro station) and is in the south of the city centre. It is served by Go North East (and a handful of Arriva buses too). Because GNE like their route branding, there's quite an array of liveries on display, though you won't see many of their new X-Lines services (just the X20 towards Houghton and Durham).

But most of the local services around the city are run by Stagecoach, and these only use on street stops. The majority use Holmeside which is just north from Park Lane, but you can see their buses on many other streets around the city centre.

Just a final word of warning, don't get your hopes up too much. I'm biased being from Tyneside, but Sunderland city centre isn't the most beautiful. If you're there for the whole day, I'd venture out a bit. Depending on your level of fitness a walk out to Barnes Park or Roker Beach might be worth considering - both are maybe half an hour out of the centre but are much more pleasant. You'd also see a greater variety of buses on the way (and Monkwearmouth is on the way to Roker Beach).

Sunderland town centre is a dump and full of scrotes, the station is also very depressing
