I was once transferred during TUPE once in the middle of the month. On the next pay day we got two payslips and two separate payments into our bank accounts - one from the old company and one from the new. The only issue was HMRC issued tax codes based on the role at the new business being a second job. The tax overpayment was refunded, but it was a bit of a pain.

Why wouldn't it work the same way for the drivers?

Because in theory, if your first employer had been a rogue, he could have not paid you for the last couple of weeks of your employment. Liability would then technically have fallen to your new employer. various legal proceedings might have ensued, but that’s the bottom line.
