Does anyone have any information on what work is going on during the Sunday line closures between Blackpool and Kirkham? Just curious...

As a side note, is there anywhere where such information (other than the "buses replace trains" info on NRE) is available online, if at all?

There is work planned at Poulton to remove a crossover and move a signal ever so slightly. It may be this.

This week there is re-sleepering, re-ballasting, maintenance to pointwork in the Poulton area. Location cabinet work near Fylde Junction, Blackpool North No.2 is having it's lever frame overhaul. The Fylde lines usually have an annual period of Sunday closures for engineering work.

I was told the crossover was going back in which is why only the Down side was removed....

I don't know of any public websites where the precise details of engineering work would be available.

I could never understand why that crossover wasnt plain lined long ago. Its not like its use is even planned if the Fleetwood line ever re-opens.

And lets just hope that electrification brings with it improvements to signalling...

Anyway, thanks for the info guys. :)

As boing_uk implied, is electrification likely to bring any infrastructure/track layout changes to the routes being electrified, such as will Blackpool North lose platforms (p1 and p8 are never used), will junctions be modified or layouts simplified. Thanks.

Believe it or not, renewing the diamond at Poulton Junction was cheaper than going through the closure procedure. Network Rail classify the Burn naze line as 'out of use' not closed.

The crossover referred to is the one just by the signalbox at Poulton which has been half removed (the down half is missing). I am told it will be reinstated during this winters possessions. As the train rounds the curve towards Blackpool North you can just about see the removed/new half in the bushes.

Thats the crossover I was referring to, not the diamond; had a TSR for a while prior to it being partially removed.

Apart from the authority to wire the Fylde lines being given nothing else has been said about improvements to the infrastructure of the line. The only real change coming up is the abolition of Blackpool North No.1 signalbox which was switched out in April 2007.

Platforms 1 and 8 are still used, although they aren't generally needed through the day they are handy in times of disruption and for stabling demics on. The most regular use platforms 1 & 8 see is at the beginning and end of service when empties are coming off or going onto the carriage sidings - Blackpool North can get quite congested in the small hours of the night.

Is it the same one Im talking about ?? the one Im on about is further towards Blackpool, not at Poulton Jn itself. There is talk of re-opening the Burn Naze branch.

The only other crossover between Poulton and Blackpool is the Down to Up at Blackpool North used by trains leaving platforms 1-3. The crossovers outside Blackpool North No.1 signalbox were removed around 6 months ago, although the signalling for them remains for now these will be removed soon.
