Then the penalty fare was correct. Unfortunately, you don't really have a leg to stand on since you refused to pay the penalty fare, the next stage is a prosecution.

Bit confused why you refused the PF as it gave you 21 days to pay it so, if you couldn't afford it at the time, you may have been able to cobble together the money before it expired.

"A summons to Magistrates Court will be received in due course"

Doesn't not say what for and it does not say a trial date. . . .

I'm sure that your letter will contain a clue. It may be in the introductory wording, along the lines of "on such and such a date you were seen having so and so". The words in place of 'so and so' would identify which Act or Byelaw the Court is being asked to consider. Please have another look and let us know.

The OP has already stated above that he was unable to pay the amount. Asking again isn't likely to change that.

It may be significant to clarify how this 'inability' manifested itself - through an attempt to pay which was refused by the Compay's representative; an attempt to pay which the OP was unable to achieve in full; an offer to pay within a few weeks which was refused; or through no attempt to pay but a simple declaration of having no means.

One would think so! The apparently simple 'inabil;ity' to pay does have to be clarified before we can anticipate the outcome accurately.

There is absolutely nothing on the letter as a clue, it says

Dear XXXX

With reference to the points you made in your letter regarding the above reference, we will be proceeding with the case. A summons to magistrates court will be sent in due course

Yes, but surely this is just referring back to the Company;s eariler letter, which in post #1 you told us that they asked for your version of events. There must have been some summary of what those 'events' were if you were able to respond as you have told us you did. What did that letter say the 'events' were?
That's where we'll find the vital information - the detail of what Offence you are about to find you are being prosecuted for.
