Suggestions please on day trips to seaside

It is a shame you are so far away from Weymouth. The train station is a 5 minute walk from the beach.

Exmouth station is walking distance to the beach but personally I prefer Weymouth or Paignton. Went to Paignton earlier in the year. Took me about 10 minutes to walk from the station to the beach - it is a straightforward walk but I am a slow walker.

At Dawlish when I went I found a lovely small beach which had a cafe and toilets nearby. I think it is called Coryton Cove. The train line runs beside the beach and a member of staff at the train station gave me directions to it. I was happy to be quite lazy when I visited Dawlish so spent most of my time on the beach - if you want to be more active I’m not sure what else is around.

Teignmouth station is walking distance to the beach but when I went the tide was in (I know I should have checked tide times beforehand) and I didn’t find much to do.

Shaldon beach is nice and isn't underwater at high tide, it's reachable by a 5 minute ferry ride from Teignmouth.

I wouldn't recommend going too far into the water though as it's at the mouth of the tidal estray so is going to have quite strong currants.

Weymouth has the beach. But is also has the harbour. If you like yachts. But its quite nice. Bus round Portland is an experience.

I’d third the suggestion of Tynemouth/Cullercoats/Whitley Bay. I’d generally tend towards the Tynemouth end of it, but the whole front from there north to Whitley Bay is beautiful and the Spanish City refurb is gorgeous. It isn’t technically quite on the seaside but the Fish Quay in North Shields has a nice selection of bars and restaurants too.

Merseyside has plenty of choice too. I like West Kirby but New Brighton is nice also.

Another for West Kirby. If the tides work you could use your time to walk to Hilbre Island. Of course New Brighton has the amusements and fair.

I'd third the suggestions for the coast around Bridlington/Filey/Scarborough. I find it surprisingly gentle, and there's a lot of stuff to do. None of the stations are particularly close to the seafront, but they're mostly easy walks, and, of course, you get more time at the beach if you're going from Doncaster! On the railway side of things, they're also really lovely stations, Bridlington in particular, although I don't think the cafe's still there.

No unfortunately the cafe at Brid is still closed but there are rumours of a reopening. Bridlington station always has a good display of flowers in the summer months, and there is now the Barrow Boy sculpture and a restored NER tile map.

Also in terms of trains there is an hourly through service from Doncaster to Brid/Filey/Scarboro'.

From Doncaster after an initial rather boring section you run next to the Humber under the Humber Bridge, into and out of Hull (Look for the brick art on the houses near St Georges Rd crossing) and then through Beverley with good views of the Minster, and on towards Bridlington. After Bridlington the line gives some views of Flamborough head just after leaving Brid and then climbs over the edge of the Wolds through Bempton before dropping down to Hunmanby. You get excellent views across the Wolds at various points. Then through Filey, in a loop to Seamer with excellent views of the Wolds escarpment, and a drop down into Scarborough.

Scarborough station was in a bit of a state on my last visit, lots of netting and scaffolding, there are problems with the roof. Not sure of current progress.

Scarborough station roof was propped up with scaffolding and netting when I visited in November 2022, I'd say I'm surprised it's not been sorted yet, but I'm not...

Filey stations overall roof is currently hidden by scaffolding and netting as it's going though a refurbishment.

Scarborough station was still in that state this summer, and there was also work being done on the building at Filey but nowhere near as much. And, ironically, they had done up Bridlington since I was last there, except for the cafe of course!

Had a trip to weymouth, 0905 waterloo, Weymouth 1205, about 3 hrs each to/from waterloo lots of stops so feels longer than going to paignton but about same time ( they seem to have changed the trains to Paignton now, early one not direct for me early ones are between 9/10am)
Beach is about 300 yds from station. there is M&S foodhall on the front, Tesco express a few streets away (for food/drink on return journey)
Beach great and can paddle out for 100 yds and water still just around tour knees
still had 1hr boat rides going from harbour side on the hr last one 2 pm
