Hi am looking at going up on 8/9 May from London for the Yorks v Surrey cricket at Headingley. I have non safeguard Priv and Govia staff pass. Plans are very weather dependent but the ideal scenario would be to go up the WCML and have a trip on the East Lancs on the Sun then what would be a nice scenic ride or two to get me across to Leeds by dark. I would then stay around Leeds or somewhere near then go to the match on Mon. Then have several hours daylight after close of play for another scenic bit before getting back to London- I'm on lates the next day so am not fussed how late I get back to London but ideally want to make 00 37 Vic to BKJ. On the way from Bury to Leeds I wouldn't mind visiting Saltaire but will miss K & WV rly as I visited the other year. Cheers for any ticket suggestions or routes

No ideas on ticketing, but some thoughts on routes.

The return options are limited, assuming there's a full day''s play.
You could do Headingley-York via Knaresborough ( might even stop off there briefly). The last bit is flat but semaphores and token working still AFAIK. Then ECML.
Or Leeds-Hudd-Penistone-Sheffield and the last up Midland.

Outward you could go back to Manchester, across to Marsden and visit the Standedge Canal Tunnel museum and onward to Saltaire.
Or bus to Accrington or Rochdale and via the Calder Valley.
There's also a bus Hebden Bridge-Keighley which would gI've you another approach to Saltaire.
BTW there's a road in Saltaire (well, in estate agent speak) called Jim Laker Place, and watching cricket in Roberts Park can be pleasant of an evening.

Suggestions for a 'Portillo' trip:

* Get 2 people to travel on board with you. One of them will carry your hand baggage on and off the train for you so that you just need to carry your Bradshaws.
* Larger suitcases go on the road vehicles.

The West Yorkshire Dayrover and the GM Rail Ranger cover the respective areas but with no overlap, so they don't work as a combination.

Jim Laker Place isn't that exciting, but there aren't many bits of Surrey cricket history in Yorkshire....
