In Greater Manchester the TVMs don't issue Cheap Evening Returns, MCT discounted fares and a few others besides, never mind Advance fares, monthly (or longer) seasons and reservations, and then you have to consider the folk who "don't know how to use them"...........

I purchased a ECD ticket from the machine at Hazel Grove a few weeks ago :s

I'd read it as gnolife saying that the announcement was too quiet for them to hear anyway (and too quiet for her to detect). If it was loud enough and she just drowned it out then I definitely agree with you

I'd also not have issued the penalty fare were I the RPI - might they have been under the impression that that train always misses out Hildenborough?

For once I completely agree with you

Good while it lasted eh! :)

The Mem usually returns from work with tales of misfortune or stupidity that befall the travelling public... Just last week a female at Newark Northgate came down the stairs to the Up platform saw the CIS display saying Peterborough train (on Platform 3) and boarded it. My good lady did point out that catching the EC service from Platform 2 would've got her to Peterborough a lot quicker than the EMT service (via Lincoln) she was travelling on.

I've made errors myself. Travelling just one station on the ECML to attend an assessment saw me get on the train at Grantham... As we sped through Newark Northgate for Doncaster i realised that i would be a bit late...

Or the time i came back on the last local service of the night from Kings Cross following a Network South East Day out (remember them?) As the train arrived at Peterborough i woke up to face the stark reality that my car was parked at Huntingdon, with no train back that night. :|

A friend of mine boarded a train at Waterloo to head home to Surbiton last night, but ended up being woken up at Southampton Central!

He was quite intoxicated, and we will not be letting him live it down.

Go on then, what did you do?

(Incidentally, if you did that nowadays, there would be a train straight back to Huntingdon! Last train 0135 KGX - PBO 0317, 0325 PBO - HUN 0339 ;) )
