Stupid/amusing rail-related dreams

Not sure if there's been a thread on this before, but...

Last night I dreamt that I needed to go from the Student Robotics venue to Southampton. Considering that the Student Robotics venue IS normally in Southampton, I don't know exactly where I was going from .

I found myself in King's Cross without a ticket (looked nothing like King's Cross, but I just *knew* it WAS ), so I went up to the TVM and looked at tickets to Waterloo (!!! I think my brain was slightly confused as to where I wanted to go ). The TVM told me that there were major disruptions on the SWML, and redirected me to some random person's blog post for some reason. This blog post told me that people were getting diverted via Thameslink! (On a 317, apparently).

That's some diversion!

Just this morning (0930 is too late to say "last night") I dreamt that we have having another RailUK Challenge in London - specifically at Charing Cross on the Bakerloo line (an open air Bakerloo line though). sonic2009 was my teammate.

Unfortunately, it got held up by floodingearly on and later dogfight between terrorists and the Average Joe (the Joe known to Challengers on this Forum was not competing), and we all had to give up and catch a bus. Not sure which though.

I've had plenty of railway related dreams, but can only remember a few.

Once I dreamt I was catching a train from what my brain told me was Southampton Central, although the station itself looked more like Liege Guillemins. When the train turned up it was a 158, but soon morphed into a 315 painted in dark blue, without yellow ends.

I have also had dreams involving trains in inappropriate places, such as a Desiro on the Isle of Wight, and 37s on the Bakerloo line.

One where I was the the controls of a Mk4 from York, and one where - for reasons unknown - they had to get all the trains out of Waverley, and I commandeered a Turbostar to do just that. All very odd.

For the record, I've also had one where I had a joy ride in a decker round by neighbourhood...

Seeing a friend on the other platform at a strange very arty Underground station and trying to leap over two tracks and whilst falling realising that was a really stupid idea and then waking up on impact!

I normally have weird dreams, I rarely have travel related dreans, but one stuck out recently, it was so outlandish it was unbelievable, I dreamt the Leamside was brought back into action, it had actually been on my mind all day as I had earlier walked it with my dog. In the dream, all I remember was sitting on a diverted hst to newcastle, when an announcement come on the tannoy 'the drivers died, has anybody got driving experience' I was playing Railworks on a laptop, and somebody decided this enough for me to take control of the situation, it did not seem to matter that I was only experienced as a Rail Gamer.

I woke up at the point when somebody said to me 'it is okay we can somehow wire your laptop up, and you can use the game controls to drive the train' probably the best time to wake up when I think about it...

Another Bakerloo line one I remember saw all manor of railcarts coming through the tunnels - and by "railcarts", I mean literally handcars, sometimes without the "cart" and eaving only the wheels. No wonder LUL an get so congested with trains like that!

When I was younger I used to have a recurring dream in which my mother was walking me home in the real Shoeburyness and on the correct route and I got stuck in a foot tunnel under the nearby road. I would then come out, she would be gone - and a 312, in proper NSE colours, would be coming towards me. On one occasion this morphed into a "special" involving a D stock train - not that I knew it was D stock, unlike the 312 (I was only seven) - charging around at home, running over the whole family!

The content of these dreams never bothered me because I found them quite amusing, although looking back now they are quite dark (unsurprisingly from my perspective). That said, the detail was incredible - how a brain of only seven years can create details as inch-perfect of a *real* area several hundred metres wide seems almost unreal - even with a photographic memory...

That said, I've discussed these two "kid" ones before.

I've often had a dream of a wierd version of Birmingham New Street, which has a grand vaulted glass roof over some platforms, with Pendolinos and steam trains side-by-side, then in another area, set up more like an underground station with many levels of escalators... however all this is nothing when compared to the dreamy world it is set, in which I have an alternative version of the UK, with different motorways, underground etc., but I could go on forever with that.

Oh, I've just remembered another one I had ages ago. I can't remember all the details, but it was bloody weird.

I was at Andover at night, I can't remember why, and I needed to go somewhere, possibly Salisbury. The track layout was all weird, with bay platforms where there were never any (eg the West side of plat 2) and the fast lines were back in place. I was waiting on the platform, and various unusual, short trains were arriving and departing (including 1st-gen diesel railcars and many I didn't recognise) - some were even departing from the fast lines, and people had to walk to the middle of the tracks and climb up onto the trains! I ran across the track (!!) to the London platform after an announcement said the train I wanted was leaving from there, and for some reason I didn't get on it. Then some cars started driving up the track under a railway bridge that had magically appeared East of the station - I had suddenly noticed the track was really run-down and overgrown. I can't remember exactly how it ended but I seem to remember there was some kind of accident - possibly one of the cars crashing into the platform.

I actually still remember the one I had years ago where I went with a group of others to this LUL preserved line, which was in a tunnel with it's own station. There was a Battery loco there but that went, and we were disappointed to find out that only a Devon & Cornwall 153 was operating on the line!!

Another one I had in relation to LU was them using DRS 37's as Thunderbirds, and I remember some 37/6 coming in to Farringdon or something with this dead C stock in tow, in passenger service ! Imagine that! I'd be going round the circle line all day!

I've had numerous dreams where Exeter St Davids resembles your vision of Birmingham New Street, albeit with HST's instead of Pendolino's beside the steam loco's.

Oddly enough I've had a couple of dreams involving Exeter St Davids too

The only one I can remember is waiting at what appeared to be platform 5 of St Davids. The tracks through the station had been electrified at 25kv AC and oddly enough, all of the trains were Eastern European - I remember one train arriving which was hauled by what appeared to be a Polish electric locomotive, which I got on. The train was very busy, and en route the train morphed into a class 455. Then for some reason the guard announced the train was going to Barnstaple.

Another one I had a few months ago involved me looking out of a first floor window overlooking Bridge street in Winchester (for those of you who know the city, Bridge street is to the left of the bus station. There's also a roundabout where Chesil street joins, next to a pub). Embedded in the road were tram tracks, but instead of trams, very long freight trains rushed past at high speeds. One train I saw was hauled by a double-section version of the Bombardier Traxx, and another appeared to be hauled by an electric version of the Soviet 2TE10U, which crashed through a road sign someone had put in the middle of the track.

Another one I had involved me being stark naked and walking towards the gateline at a tube station. I simply walked through the gateline because the barriers shrank and fell flat on the floor. When I got onto the platform, I saw a 96TS train arrive, then I walked back onto the concourse and up a ramp that got progressively steeper. Then the dream cut to a large model of a 47 making animal noises on a bed, while David Attenborough (unseen) narrated in complete gibberish.

Nothing quite so outlandish, but on one occasion I did dream in great detail that I was trainspotting on Nottingham Victoria station on a beautiful summers day. The station was for whatever reason all painted in NSE colours, red lamp-posts/benches etc (I can only assume my brain transposed in a bit of Marylebone) but the trains were all still steam etc. I was actually quite distressed when I woke up and realised it wasn't real!

I've had several others but I don't really remember them in enough detail to discuss, except that I once had a nightmare that I was in charge of a shunt and somehow manage to crush the fireman (who took the form of a friend of mine) between the loco and the stock, which was horrible.

Funny enough, many of my railway related dreams involve rolling stock combinations that would never happen in real life or train types in unfamiliar locations.

Some examples include -

Metropolitan Line 'A' stock (in 'unpainted' silver/grey livery) travelling up the West Coast Main Line between Preson and Lancaster

A class 47 in Thameslink yellow & Blue livery (from the late 1990s / early 2000s) backing onto Mk1s at Wolverhampton, before the 47 morphed into a pair of heavily workstained BR blue class 20s

A class 33 hauling a passenger train down a road (I had been watchin a DVD about the Weymouth Quay branch the day before)

A HST on the Thameslink 'widened' lines at Farringdon

A pair of DRS class 20s with an RHTT set on a railtour

A BR green class 08 plus brakevan in one of the north facing bays at Crewe about to work a PLEG charter all the way to Chester, and hundreds of ordinary passengers trying to squeeze on.

But because no-one won (or lost) in my Challenge, it's a bit of a dud. If we genuinely had lost, then yes it probably would have (along the lines of "I dreamt we'd lose")...

I had a dream that I was wandering around an empty Ruislip Depot, which was post-apocalyptic in its state of abandonment, with trees growing through all the tracks and so on. There were some sheds (not the locos!) which looked like the abandoned ones at Betchworth. I was with some people with whom I have never been to Ruislip, and for some reason we felt it was acceptable to walk the tracks as and when necessary. Strangest thing is that I have never needed to do so in real life... or anywhere nearby! In fact, I don't really know the area that well at all.

Very coincidental that I've seen this thread, as I had a VERY unusual rail-related dream last night! All of my dreams are utterly bizarre; if there was a competition for the weirdest dream, I'd win a mile!

Anyway, in my dream, even though I'm from Cardiff, I ended up in York. It didn't even look remotely anything like York. York was only a six platform station also, which was odd as of course in real life it has eleven platforms. A Pendolino turned up in passenger service; of course Pendolinos do not run on the ECML. Then, an FGW HST turned up and overshot the buffers and hit a wall, but this apparently was normal parking. I believe 43139 was the power car too. Another FGW HST turned up and parked up, although this time normally. In my dream, I realised that the Pendolino was off route, as I was calling through the stations from London: Euston, Warrington Bank Quay, Wigan NW, Preston etc, so had no idea how it got to York!

I then left the station premises, walked up a hill and jumped on a bus. I saw my real-life friend who happens to be from Northallerton (hence why I saw her in York!) and she was with her brother, even though I've never met her brother once (I said I had weird dreams!). I then caught a double-decker bus somewhere and realised that I needed to get back to Cardiff (well, Bristol to be exact - as I attend uni there), as I had a lecture at 2 o'clock. It was a Thursday too, and last year I had a lecture from 2pm until 5pm (again in real life). I then found out that a walk-up single home was £595! I then noticed I had to pay something else and in total I'd have had to pay £1000 for something. It was all totally bizarre; I had no idea what was going on!

I woke up then and reflected on the dream I had. Because I had to buy a ticket to get home, this morning when I woke up I actually looked at how much a single from York to Cardiff is in real life! (it's only £62 via Manchester!).

All in all, a totally bizarre dream!

I had a dream that wasn't rail related - but it was rather implausible in places so I started believing it might be a dream (first time I've ever done that). However, my brain clearly wanted to fight back, as later I was reading railforums.co.uk (still in my dream!!!) and a thread had been started in General Discussion relating to the events of said dream! (After that I believed it was real until I woke up)

Another one from me - and it's somewhat sad, and arguably even tragic.

I dreamt about my friend in Leeds - the same friend who featured in what was almost certainly the most "divisive" (non-political) thread I have ever posted on any forum to date - on Monday night, although I don't remember the dream. I thought nothing of it. She then contacted me on Tuesday, having been "quiet" since the New Year, saying she wanted to talk over Skype for a while. On Tuesday night, I dreamt about her again - and last night, it happened once more.

Only this time, I dreamt she was dying. And eventually, I realised she was in London and that I needed to use an HST to Paddington and then the Bakerloo line to get to her before it was too late. Spot a pattern here? HST to Paddington, then Bakerloo line, and then seeing my friend? The exact plot for June 1st last year, as linked above.

I was not amused to say the least, especially by the fact that she was dying in my dream...

Had a very odd dream last night. I was covering the night shift at an unknown station that was not one of the stations I've ever worked at. I was told by the late turn that I had to carry out a periodic inspection of a room. When I got there it had a really low ceiling and I had to duck. The room was huge but had loads of hidden corners. When I got round one corner into the main room there was a conveyer belt that had boxes coming off it into the room. Some boxes had brand new stationery still in them, whereas others were just scraps of paper and other dry waste.

One of the more weird dreams I had was a recurring dream between 1998 to 2001, it involved the Suicide I witnessed at Kings Cross Tube Station, like i said it went on for years and after 2000, the dream Involved a mate I lost who was killed near Durham, the dream was always centred round Kings Cross and in the dream the one under was sometimes my friend, even though he died in Durham.

I also have daft dreams where I buy a TOC, I don't know why I dream that, and I always buy a company for a nominal fee, either 50p or £1

Just last night I had a dream where I was walking down a platform of a station that seemed to be Droitwich Spa but with 3 platforms. There was a Chiltern Silver service sat in platform 3 waiting to depart, to find myself then walking into the cab on the DVT and discovered I was the guard. I had been instructed to check tickets (by whom I don't know) so walked into the first carriage as the train left towards London. I got to the first table (despite supposedly being in a mk3 coach, it looked more like the interior of a 170) and a woman with a small child who asked to purchase a ticket to Stoke-on-Trent. I then realised I did not have the portable ticket machine that guards carry (sorry don't know what they're called) and went to the DVT where it was lying in a cardboard box. As I approached I said "Oh, well I haven't been trained on one of these things, but I'll give it a try" (slightly embarrassed). I entered the details of the journey onto a two-tone LCD screen (now I have never seen what the screen looks like in real life) and waited for it to give the price, but I was confronted with a map of local counties - if you selected one it gave a different price - I couldn't work out which one it was then the dream sort of fizzled out as I woke up.

Anyone have a possible explanation for that dream..?
