Struggling At The First Hurdle!!

Hi Guys, I feel stupid really posting this, but here goes... I'm currently applying for a train driver job and the application form includes "scenarios" that you have to grade into 1-4 in regards to having a late night in hospital and then phoning in to your manager the next day, sad thing is everytime i look at the question i see plus and minus points to putting each answer into postion 2 or 3. Is this something that is common on application forms?

Who is this for? I can't say I have ever come across this on an application form. Not with First Group anyway.

Heard rumours a few weeks back that the application process was changing format which would give previous failing applicants another go at it.this could be it implemented now.

A new one to me also, I would guess that it would be based on doctor is driver, patients are passengers type thing and prioritising the usual points that they look for, safety, customer service etc.

Probably not a good idea to post full doc on here but if you give simular examples then i'm sure people will try and help. Otherwise I would go with what I said above, however I am sure others can expand further and give their veiws.

It's less cryptic than that - you're at the hospital late with an ill relative and have an early driving shift the next morning...

Thanks, it sounds like a great job, so i'm really trying to give it my all.

You're told you're worried about your performance because you've got a full shift to do.

You've got to grade the 4 answers 1-4.
1) do nothing and drink coffee
2) Call your manager and explain everything and ask what can be done
3) Call your manager and explain. But when he asks are you fit to drive say yes as you don't want to let him down.
4) Call your manager and ring in sick so you don't have to explain whats gone on at home.

Well for me 1 is number 4. 2 is number one but, For me i'm struggling to put 3-4 in an order, 4 means you won't drive the train but you're not being honest and 3 means you will drive the train but have explained the situation.

For sure I agree with you regarding the order of points 1 and 2.

For points 3 and 4 I'm thinking SAFETY CRITICAL! You ring and explain to your manager and advise that you can operate the train on your early shift but CAN you? *lack of sleep/rest * your mind not fully on the job/lack of full concentration = potentially putting yourself / passengers / train in danger.

Whereas ringing in sick? Sometimes sick leave is unavoidable and we should not feel punished for being sick (albeit in this case not physically sick).

Caught between a rock and a hard place!!

For me it's the fact you're not being honest, but yes i think on balance the important thing is you're not going to drive the train.

Well, I think if you can be true to yourself and always think SAFETY SAFETY SAFETY then you (hopefully)! wont go too far wrong.
