Definition of an emergency: 'a situation of sudden danger or conflict which requires immediate action.' I imagine as a publican you had many situations which fit the above description (dealing with drunk punters spoiling for a fight takes a high degree of calm and skill). As for what the assessors are looking for I boiled it down to 3: 1. Ability to remain calm under pressure; 2. The physical response: flight or fight; 3. Ability to engage the brain: intervene effectively to deal with a situation of sudden conflict/danger. Hope that helps. I'm no expert, but I am through to the medical and final interview with Driver Manager.

Hi Dave. Thanks for the reply. I'm being interviewed for a senior conductor but I am presuming that the questions are the same or similar?

The only difference between a driver and conductor is as a conductor your main concern is the passengers. Ensuring their safety and well being. The driver will have to look after the train in an emergency situation. As a conductor you still need to remain calm under pressure and obey rules but also need to provide good customer service.

Thanks both OTM and Dave and good luck OTM. I feel happier now. I was worried my emergency situation wouldn't be considered serious enough.

Paul,

The examples that you list are used as a foundation, around which the questions are based....ie expand !

Hi Paul

You will be asked to write down examples of various situations you have been in. They will they ask you questions about those examples. Don't fib about any of it as they will find out!

Ive just passed a structured interview paul, prior to going in for the interview i was given a form and 25minutes to write down a brief description of the 5 questions that were on the sheet.
They then ask you to expand on each topic when you go in to be interviewed. (you do not give a written response as you have mentioned)

I would say 'know your subject matter well' they will ask you details on it you had never even thought of:roll:

Paul85, my experience tells me be prepared for both scenarios. I got to my interview happily expecting to be asked the same questions I had written responses to after the assessment centre, only to find the questions I was actually asked bared little resemblance. The reason I coped was because I had prepared for both evantualities.

Well I always try and turn a negative into a positive...i.e the assessors/managers/interviewers are looking for someone who can stay calm whilst operating under pressure etc etc so what better way to show them that you can do this by staying calm and relaxed by answering all their questions in a calm and controlled manner.

Good luck and keep us all posted
