I have an advance ticket, 12.35 from Barnstaple to London Waterloo. on Thursday 16 th March. It has now been announced that this is a strike day. Can I travel on the day before ?, or do I have to apply for a refund and rebook ? No information on the SWR website so far. What happened on the previous strike days.

Based on the industry position for previous strike days, I would expect blanket permission to use your Advance on any day between the day before, up until a couple of days after the last strike day.

If I had an anytime ticket, I could change days, but an Advance, not so sure. SWR website is still selling tickets for the Thursday 16 th strike day.

As mentioned, there has been blanket ticket acceptance on days surrounding the strike days, including for Advance tickets.

I made a similar enquiry at enquiries@northernrailway.co.uk and am rather puzzled by the reply.
Am I missing something or are they?

"
Thank you for contacting Northern, there are currently no strikes announced at the the moment , there needs to be 2 weeks prior notice give to train companies when trade unions announce strikes. If you train is cancelled on that day in the morning an you are unable to use your train tickets to travel then a refund can be applied at the point of purchase.

I hope this information helps, please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with."

They are missing competence and various English language principles such as punctuation and grammar for a start!

Dear oh dear oh dear.

How utterly useless! They're just blindly reading off their script, which doesn't have any information about the upcoming strikes yet.

I would be tempted to reply with a quote and link to the RMT press release and ask them if they can explain why the RMT say their is a strike or something along those lines

Am I the only one that thinks there's a significant chance of a person with a poor command of English misinterpreting that as "if your train is cancelled, you cannot travel on a later train, but you can get a refund".

On that note, I wouldn't fancy my chances at getting a refund on a walk-up ticket purchased for a different train as a result of that misinterpretation either.

Dear oh dear oh dear.
My thoughts were a bit stronger than that;)
How utterly useless!
That is a bit nearer;)
reply with a quote and link to the RMT press release
I didnt do that but in retrospect he probably doesnt know who RMT are
misinterpreting that as "if your train is cancelled, you cannot travel on a later train, but you can get a refund".
You probably could but as it was in reply to me saying I CANT get a later train it was probably meant to say
"if your train is cancelled AND you cannot travel on a later train, you can get a refund".

Thank you for the replies.

I went to the "contact the top man" plan and whilst he didnt answer someone did and confirmed they have had notice of
a strike. so far so good - They havent got round to a timetable yet . I am not a railway person do they ballot
the staff and ask who might be working? as the RMT didnt ballot their members to see who might not be working.

I am also no further on as to when or if tickets will be refunded though I did say if I had to post them I wanted
reimbursed for the postage.
I am sure I read on RUKF somewhere that if you have a return "journey" even if it is two singles and one runs and the
other doesnt they still have to refund both. Based on previous strikes I reckon neither will run so will just have to shell
out £60 each way for a taxi.
Also another thing that someone might know My tickets were bought on line for collection at the station.
I have still not collected them so can they not just cancel them off the system and send a refund or is that too easy?
