Given the current problems of stress cracks in the bodyshells of both the Hitachi and CAF fleets, is it time to borrow an idea from aircraft safety and use stress rigs to enable early prediction of cracking / failure? If a bodyshell had been exposed to continuous stress so its fatigue life was considerably ahead of the in-use vehicles these issues could have been identified early and resolved before they became a problem.
