It's used to transfer main line registered rolling stock between the NNR and the national network, and very occasionally by charter trains. I believe there is a limit on the number of occasions per year it can be used.

As of next year, the NNR plan to run summer dining trains across the road and on to Cromer. I think the long-term dream is for NR to reinstate the third side of the triangular junction just south of Cromer so that they can run from Sheringham through to Norwich without having to reverse at Cromer, though finding paths and a platform to terminate in (to say nothing of the lack of run-round facilities at Norwich) might be further obstacles. Of course, for those who don't know, the crossing in Sheringham was only reinstated a few years back. In period, the current NR station on the eastern side of the road didn't exist - the NNR site was the station.

For years after BR put up the current Bittern Line station, the link was severed and visiting NNR locos had to arrive via. road haulage, which, given the road situation in the area, was pretty awkward to say the least. The following link to a BBC News slideshow shows photos from the reopening in March 2010 when BR Standard 7P 70013 "Oliver Cromwell" hauled a service across the road for the first time since the 1960s.

What about an overlooked one...?

Ladies and Gentlemen, I present Sheringham

BR station view

NNR View

Maybe the only connection that not only has a car park on top of it and which also runs through a sort of town green area and seating spot, but also the only railway line to run over a footpath and double yellow lines?

Complete with a "keep crossing clear" panel on the road sign...

Yep - gives me a laugh

I wonder if that crossing/connection "wins" the prize for street running as i can't think of any other operational street running - the Bristol example being on private land

Operational by who?
As has been pointed out the Britannia Bridge in Portmadog, although a long level crossing, could also be deemed "street running" as it does run along the road, and the Welsh Highland Railway is most definitely operational.
Ditto the preserved line at Preston Docks.

(Both of which have been mentioned earlier)

No boats from Weymouth to the channel islands anymore.
After the council spending £4mil to fix the crumbling harbour (which meant that all condor sailings got transferred to poole for about a year) Condor decided to sell 2 of their existing catamarans (the Condor Vitesse and Express 86m (iirc) Incat's ) and replace them with a single Austal 103m Trimaran (which isn't going to well at the moment but that's another story) which would be unable to use the current dock at Weymouth without another £10mil or so being spent (no one in the council thought to make sure Condor stayed if they did the work), unfortunately our useless local MP (Richard Drax) couldn't get any money from a government grant to do the work (which ended up basically all going to improve the facilities at Poole) so they moved everything back to Poole which is a real shame esp. for tourists.

There are talks of a company (high speed ferries) operating a service to St. Malo but nothing has come of that yet.

Ah, okay, thanks.

I'm not certain of the current status of the network there, or if it really counts for this purpose, but fairly sure Rosyth Dockyard had a fair amount of its rail network sharing space with roads. Most docks with rail connections had some shared spaces, I believe.

Are the tracks still in place in Bridge Road in Sharpness? I don't think they've been used for ages anyway. This Geograph photo from 2009 shows what I'm referring to:

Yes, they are still in place – or certainly were a year or two ago – and some work appeared to have been done to them, suggesting they might perhaps still be in use. Certainly I think I have seen trains on the Sharpness line though not in the docks themselves.

The Vale of Berkeley Railway has bought the old engine shed on the docks, which would have to use this section of line if it is ever to be connected to the branch.

The commercial side of the dockyard doesn't - just a few level crossings and a lack of fences

What do you mean about run round facilities at Norwich?

Interestingly just south of Norwich station there is a triangle junction, which actually would allow a top & tailed train to reverse back over the junction then head to Sheringham with the steam loco at the front....

And I'd expect NR to require any such train from the NNR to have another loco attached in case of problems.

If I am permitted to be a little cheeky, the line from Ffarquhar to the Anopha Quarry has several sections of street running - as is the area around Ffarquhar station itself. Toryreck station also has street running as well as Tidmouth.

Trains still run to Barton containerbase don't they?

No, they stopped a few years ago and the track into Containerbase have been lifted so there's no going back. I think they transferred the service to the nearby Trafford Park Freightliner depot.

Is that the track within container base its self? I had a look today and the branch up to the containerbase still seems to be in situ

Yeah, the rest of the branch is still there, but if you look on Google Streeview you can see how the track in the Containerbase has now been lifted.
