Strathspey Railway updates

The main 2026 season for the Strathspey is underway. There have been a couple of changes from 2025:

- Running days. Last year it was Monday and sometimes Tuesday that the train didn't run. This year it seems to be Fridays and sometimes Thursdays, depending on the month and demand. Overall though, its running most days of the week throughout the season.
- Catering has changed from light lunch on the mid day train and afternoon tea on the afternoon service, to afternoon tea for both lunch and afternoon. Last year, both were available as an option later in the season for lunchtime. Afternoon tea must have been more popular, although I personally preferred light lunch and wouldn't be rushing for afternoon tea again (it was great, just too sweet for my taste).

Otherwise it looks like a similar season.

Locos are again the two Ivatts - 512 and 464, and the Black Five, 5025. Three mainline steam locos available is very impressive. There is also 828, on hire to the Spa Valley Railway again this year, but it would be fair to say there are four mainline operational steam locos from the Strathspey.

In terms of rolling stock this year's train is a similar formation with a selection of TSOs, a restaurant / buffet, a BKS acting as first class with the possibility to book a private compartment, a dedicated disabled access TSO, and the Gresley Coronation oberservation carriage. Plus the LMS inspection saloon on most trains, available as two private compartments, with catering.

I visited a week ago: the observation car was not in the formation. The SRPS Ivatt was supported by Brush 2 D5682 because of the fire risk (there was a badly burnt field next to the line, and the whole area looked pretty dry!) - I don't know if it has rained since to enable normal working?

Will there be another 'Mixed Traffic' event this year, similar to last October's very enjoyable event?

You are right, sorry I forgot to say that its getting some maintenance right now but it is due back for the season.

There quite often seems to be very dry weather in speyside at this time of the year.

That's huge news for the Strathspey!
Exciting future to have another large mainline loco on the line.
Don't think it will go mainline will the B.R. standard 4MT 76079 after its stint on the N.Y.M.R. After all its real mainline tours it did mainly was when Rileys at the E.L.R. owned 76079 did the tin bath tours via Barnsley up summer Lane and the cambrian to name a few tours
it did before E.T.C.S. went live in about 2010 on the cambrian line.
Class 4 locos Are not fast enough these days on the national network the last B.R. standard 4MT even to run was 76084 from York whitby and then from Bury E.L.R. to Sheringham.

Yes, its not going to be mainline registered. I mean its a mainline loco, not a tank, industrial etc.

76079 is now at the railway, and according to their FB page, at Aviemore shed.

Strathspey are holding a summer steam and diesel gala!

Strathspey have announced a really exciting summer gala programme on 14, 15 and 16 August. Subject to availability, they are hoping to have both Ivatt's, the Black Five, class 27, 31 and 37 all in service! Despite visiting quite a few times I'm yet to see the newly restored Ivatt, 46464 in service so that would be great.

There will be a shunter hauled service each day with 08490 and North British D2774. I don't remember that happening before at the Strathspey, does anyone else remember a shunter hauled train at SR?

Ruston 48DS "Queen Anne" will have cab visits at Boat of Garten, and there will be driver for a fiver with the class 08. At Aviemore there will be shed and signal box visits.

There is also three trips each day on the class 117 DMU up to the end of the current line over the river Spey which doesn't see service as its part of the extension to Grantown.

And, brake van rides between Boat and Aviemore! They took place last year, and a really nice way to view the line.

I'm hoping to get along for at least one day, and hopefully two or more as there is way more to see and do than one day would allow.

Yes, D3605 hauled a passenger train on 30/09/17 from Aviemore station to the shed. This was the day that SRPS ran a special to Aviemore and Inverness with a GBRf 66 and 73 so there were plenty of enthusiasts on it including me!

I have heard that the village of Nethy Bridge has been evacuated due to the large wildfires in the area. Will this evacuation close the railway?
Not according to their Facebook, they are running normal service with heritage diesels but some staff have had to deal with abuse because there's no steam! Beggars belief really....
