Stratford (London) interchange

Hi all,

Next Saturday, I'll be traveling from Stratford to Clacton, I'll be using the Central Line to get to Stratford and it's been about 10 years since I was last there so can't recall the layout very well.

I potentially won't have long at Stratford as I need to be in Clacton as early as possible so ideally need to be on the 09:18, just so I can prepare myself, Realtimetraisn shows the Clacton services usually departing from platform 10, is this close to the Central line platforms?

Also, ticketing, will there be barriers to go through or are there Oyster readers between the Central line and National Rail platforms so I don't end up with an incomplete TFL journey.

No barriers; that would be impossible as Central Line has cross-platform interchange with Crossrail services.

Two of the three subways (B and C) provide an easy (if crowded at times) connection between Central Line and all National Rail* platforms, while subway A is good for platform 10 (but not 10A); see map:

I think your best bet is probably to alight from the very front of the Central Line and use Subway C; I am only an occasional user of this station though, so someone more familiar may be better placed to advise.

(* Except London Overground, which uses the lower level, and which, although part of NR, is separately signed by TfL anyway)

I'd looked at the National Rail map you attached but couldn't visualise the layout from memory.

I'll board the Central line as far forward as possible so I'm closest to subway C then.

I'll have around 10-15 minutes so shouldn't have a problem but the layout is rather confusing.

Looking at a satellite map might help, as Stratford has grown haphazardly over the years. From south to north on the high level you have:

Platforms 3-8, the (1940s) group that now serve the Central and Elizabeth lines
Next to those are 9 and 10, a relatively new island platform on the Fast lines

Up and right (aka slightly to the northeast), 10a is the only other platform your train could use; it's part of the original station along with 11 and 12 which go off on a sharp curve (NR can't show that!) to the north.

Finally, next to 12, there's 13-14 for the North London Line (Overground).

Certainly the correct advice, I've worked there! Platform 6 to platform 10 should take all of a minute, and you'll be at the right end for Clacton too. Clacton train is 09.25 from Stratford.

I'm sure you don't mean that. Platforms 1-2 for the NLL. 13-14 (and 15) are the Jubilee line platforms.

Shows how long since I was last there!

There is some logic to the non-sequence - IIRC 1 and 2 were the LL platforms back when the NLL took over the North Woolwich line (and presumably since the 40s).

Yes Stratford Low Level platforms 1 and 2 were the Woolwich lines, now numbered 16 and 17 for the Docklands Light Railway, which also runs from what was called platforms 4 and 4A (the map just calls both platforms 4) while the Westbound Central line is platforms 3 and 3A (doors open both sides) and there’s no platform 7. Simple!
