National Rail offers "2FOR1" entry to various London attractions (see http://www.daysoutguide.co.uk/) when travelling in by train.

Is it sufficient to buy a National Rail ticket 1 stop, say,
* Bethnal Green or Stratford -> Liverpool Street, or
* Limehouse -> Fenchurch Street?

The FAQs on their website suggest it is permissible.

Has anyone tried anything so cheeky and confirm it is acceptable?

Cheers, apologies if this is slightly off topic.

I believe the cheapest qualifying tickets are Singles from Waterloo East ([stn]WAE[/stn]) to Charing Cross ([stn]CHX[/stn]) or Vauxhall ([stn]VXH[/stn]) to Waterloo ([stn]WAT[/stn]), with either a Jobcentreplus (JCP) or GroupSave discount. Very few of the attractions insist on you holding a Return ticket, and they don't ask to see Railcards...

Staff just need to show their PRIV or Staff Travel ("boxes") Card to use the offer.

If you are going to need a one day travelcard to travel around London to get to those 2 for 1 attractions anyway (I would imagine most visitors, admittedly maybe not all, will) why not get that?

thanks for the suggestions!

CyrusWuff -- WAE-CHX etc is only marginally cheaper, and I would actually use the journey from an East London station.

dzug2 -- good idea. Usually I just bike so didn't think about it, but actually I'll be joined by a friend.

If you do this, bear in mind that Travelcards must be issued by a national rail station to benefit from this offer. TfL sourced Travelcards do not count.

Do tickets issued on NR stock from TfL managed NR LUL and LOROL stations count?
