Strange sounds in the sky

Did anybody else hear strange noises in the sky today? It was in Leicester around 20:40, it sound exactly the same as a low flying plane but not a plane is sight O.O. Sounded like this, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OQGnUpzm8-U&feature=related

I heard a very similar noise here this evening, and do every now and again, it's just a fighter jet flying up the Forth.
There's sometimes high flying aircraft which also sound pretty similar to that, and they're not always visible.

Its been raining most of the day and the cloud base has been quite low, its likely that what you heard was a jet taking off from EMA (sound travels further in wet conditions) a low flying jet hidden by the low cloud, or a jet on short final approach with the sound amplified by the wet weather.

Yes, it could of been as the plane flight route goes directly over my house and surrounding areas, the only thing that confuses me is that it sounded like it was hovering over, it lasted for about 7 minutes.

Get this quite a lot in the Scottish Borders as fast low flying aircraft pass overhead and suggests they are flying almost parallel to where you are standing (not directly overhead)
The noise is far less when the aircraft are at higher altitudes however if you record it and play back you will soon realise it is very similar

I noticed a similar noise when watching RAF Tornado jets testing off the Moray coast at high altitude
I could see them circling several miles off coast and the noise was exactly the same as in the video, but pulsating as they travelled nearer and then further away and this was due to the time delay due to direction

The noise of a jet can do that in wet weather I live about a mile away from RAF Waddington's runway and today the sounds of the sentrys doing circuits and bumps seemed to linger also it could be that 2 aircraft took off one after the other and without a visual cue because of the cloud your ears tricked you into thinking it was one continuous noise rather than 2 seperate noises.

Thanks for the reply, this would explain the noises getting "louder" and "quieter".

This is more likely caused by the clouds as the noise gets reflected and refracted by all the obstructions and the ground

When observing the RAF Tornado jets off the Moray coast there were no clouds
I do agree though, during wet weather it becomes difficult to determine where exactly the jet is
Sometimes if the cloud is patchy the aircraft can be seen appearing, not where you expected it

Remember that a jet aircraft may not be flying in a straight line. My father lives near an RAF base in Norfolk and on days when we presume the fighter pilots are practicing their mid air combat skills, the aircraft can suddenly climb 10000ft or more vertically above where you are standing.

It's strange, fast jets have a very distinctive approach sound, to me it sounds almost like a suction (well they are rather air-hungry beasts), when they pass overhead you know all about it. This sounds like a low-flying airliner more than anything, not a fast jet most certainly.

It depends how far away they are, they sound pretty different when you hear them passing a few miles away than when they're nearly overhead.

True, heard a Typhoon buzz the tattoo on Saturday Night, just heard a loud rattling, preceeded by a brief sucking sound. Was having a lovely meal and the whole restaurant was vibrating, so it must have been and incredibly low pass, but with agility like those aircraft are blessed with compared to a Tornado F3, probably a bit easier to take them down to low level, not saying it's safe though.

I saw the typhoon display at waddington airshow and was amazed by how agile they are and how low the pilots dare to go, they looked like they were having a good time though. I'm learning to fly a piper cub atm but I can only dream of throwing an aeroplane around the sky like typhoon pilots do. It is really first class flying.

I heard a Typhoon flying up the Forth about an hour ago or so.
My room faces away from the Forth, but I know that's what it was.

Wrong way round, I'm afraid, chap. Wet weather such as rain, fog etc actually dampens the sound. Pun intended, as an easier way of remembering. The water droplets in the air lessen the ability of the soundwave to penetrate the air.

Solid water is a good conductor of sound, however which is why submarine sonar can hear objects from so far away, so clearly. This is before you get in to convergence zones, etc.

That's due in part to that fact that Water is far more dense than air, as a result sound waves travel faster in water, so they travel far further before dissapating.

If I remember correctly, sound also tends to travels farther at night and in colder conditions.

Spot on. Sound at night can be for different factors however, such as the temperature, the absence of other noises such as traffic can help you hear a sound further away as well.
