Strange occurrence in Sheffield today.

At 1545 this afternoon, the lights at the top of Haymarket appeared to have stuck on red, there was a long queue of buses tailing back down towards The Wicker, the drivers were becoming restless. After a few minutes, several Police motorcyclists appeared providing an escort for sixteen coaches which came from the direction of Arundel Gate and continued down Commercial Street. Five of them belonged to Leon's Travel, there were also several of P&D of York and Hills of Wolverhampton.

Does anyone know what the purpose of this operation was?

I was delayed crossing Sheaf Street around 12:00 (having just got off the 158 on the Dearne Valley stopper - makes a nice change from a Pacer) and there was a relatively long police escort of Wolves coaches heading south toward Bramall Lane - I remember noting that quite a few of the coaches were from nowhere near Wolverhampton but I didn't remember the names until I saw this thread.

Slightly surprised (not thinking that Wolves would have been much bother - I don't remember any trouble from Wolves fans in the past?), but the Police were crawling all over the place today - not helped by the fact that Wednesday were only at Donny, so plenty scope for fans to get in each other's way.

Odd that the Police would have taken them (back to the Parkway?) via Arundel Gate rather than the much faster route along Sheaf Street - you never get a fast ride along Arundel Gate!

Was there an EDL (or similar group) demo in the region? Sounds like a convoy of coaches going home after a march - with police protection to prevent a breach of the peace.

Sheffield United v Wolves was a 1325 kick-off so fans would have been leaving around 1520~ onwards.

Thanks for the answers. Having looked at the fixtures before I went to Sheffield, I was expecting most of the fans to be travelling by train, Wolves - Birmingham - Sheffield.

I wonder how the Wednesday fans got to Donny, wasn't that line closed today?
