What is the strangest pairing of locos in multiple either on a Railtour or Passenger train?

I have seen video footage of a 25/0+37/4 pairing leaving Shrewsbury on a Cambrian service & they were in multiple!

Another memorable one was 33207+31405 in multiple up the Cumbrian Coast to Workington.

One I missed was 37229+40145 in multiple from Chester.

Not on a passenger working but the most surprising multiple working I have seen was at Kenny O in August 2008 when 47501 & 37059 went through on a stoneblower move :o

Not passenger use but 73 and 31/97 are common on test train transit moves in the SE and to and from Derby. 73 and 31 used to be a diagrammed pair for a test working out of Eastleigh.

Of course, 20 and 37 are common on flask trains.

I've heard of a 33/1 + VEP + TC set with the loco and EMU working in multi (thanks to the SR common control system).

That was a regular working at one time out of Waterloo, I believe; they'd divide at Basingstoke, I think, and the 33 + Tc would go on to Salisbury and the VEP would trundle off towards Southampto.

* And then there was the period just before the line to Weymouth was electrificated, when they took one DMS out of a REP and put a 73 in.

I'm convinced I've read stories of a 33/1 and REP plus something or other for whatever reason being plugged into one another and going off like a rocket.

I've had a 31+33 combo before now. A Green Express effort in 2001, Man Vic to Ravenglass and back. The Shredder was 103, can't remember the Ped though!

Another one I had was 92032+56120 - both powering! A Pathfinder outing in 2000. I had the unusual combo Preston to Wigan North Western. I remember it well as it was the loadest and 'clagiest' Grid bash I've ever done! Front window action as well! 120 became my favourite Class 56 as a result!

In the 1960s class 33s sometimes ran in multiple with class 24s when hauling steam heat only LHCS. This was due to the 33s being ETH fitted but lacking steam heating boilers, the 24s were added to provide the heat.

Any likelihood of another 31/97 combo move happening soon? Missed out on the last one with the 9 coaches!

Pedant alert! ;)

Some people are getting confused between working in multiple (one driver controlling two or more locos with a common control system, such as 25/31/33/37 - all "blue star" IIRC) and working in tandem two or more locos that do not share a control system with a driver in each one (ie the class 40 +52 and 56 + 92 combos)

Strangest combo I can think of is the Netherlands class 12 electric and Belgian class 62 diesel lash up as formerly used by ACTS. Despite being powered by different means and being from different countries, ACTS had them modified so they really could work in multiple and you could drive the electric down a non-electrified line using just the diesel; in fact they have been used in this manner on a tour

Another one I missed was Pathfinder Tours Birthday Bash, it worked out of Bescot with a 73 in multi with a 37!

Of course a few Class 43 power cars worked in multi with Class 91 locos when they had TDM fitted for surrogate DVT purposes. Diesel and electric traction working in multiple is always unusual.

Class 90 + 86 hasn't been unheard of on liners. Not usually a pair seen powering together.

I'm also sure a railtour has run with two 60's in multi - I've never heard of a 60 running in multiple on any regular service, I don't think any freights have been heavy enough to warrant 2 x 60.

Do 66s work in multi or 66+59?

I expect numerous 33/1+73/1 pairings took place?

Not often on passenger traffic, but it's not uncommon to see diesel-electric locomotives with differences in age up to 51 years running together on the same service in Australia.

All praise be to standardised forms of multiple unit working!

Do 66s work in multi or 66+59?

One of the Murco tank workings, when 60 availability was low, was trialled for a time with 2 x 66 in multiple. RHTT workings usually have the 66's in multi too.

A 91 pulling an entire failed HST set.

I don't think that would have been in multiple.

66s and 67s use the AAR system, so I suppose they could theoretically work with any U.S. built loco, could they? Anyone for a Skip and a GEVO in multiple?
What about class 70s? I suppose they are MW equipped, but what system do they use? I would look it up, but Wikipedia's on strike. :(

Just to put matters straight, this topic is all about different loco combinations working in multiple & not working in tandem.

I find it good fun in the past when for reasons unknown a depot would send out odd loco pairings in multiple, sometimes at the Drivers request.

Class 70's are AAR again, I believe. I don't think you'd see one in multiple on regular trains, they're powerful enough to cope with most UK train weights.

I saw 3x 37 and a 20 working 7 flasks together this morning. Quite unusual

60061 and 60070 on a railtour that worked to Newcastle via the Tyne Valley in 2003 or late 2002 IIRC. It might have been something to do with a Blyth and Tyne tour. I've got photos somewhere. It's possible that there could be others, too.

Doubtful more than the first pair were in multi - DRS use a few flask moves as positioning moves for engines.

The first tank train to Preston docks had to be returned full because the facilities weren't ready to unload it. This is the only time 2x60 have been required on a train - in this case because of the steep gradient from Preston station.

I'm sure I was once told that there is actually a ban on multi-ing 60s as they will quite happily pull a train in half with no effort!

And here they are, being driven from the electric on the front on a preserved line! :D

Does anyone else recall that in the run up to the Rainhill events in 1980 that former Southern Loco (30)850 was coupled to ex LMS Loco (4)6229, some one had a sense of humour in that pairing!:p

On a similar note, didn't Oliver Cromwell double-head with King Edward I recently? It would have been even more ironic if King Charles I had been preserved ...

We had a play in the late 1970's (when I was a mere apprentice) where we had a VEP, an MLV and some grampus wagons, and hauled the wagons, braked, driving from the VEP. And yes, the exhauster speed up button on the VEP did work!!
