Currently on the 14.24 GWR service from Portsmouth Hbr to Cardiff. There is a really annoying high pitched noise that only ceases when the recorded announcements are made then it resumes again. I’ve spoken to the guard about it who only suggested moving to the next carriage (which I’ve done)but it’s making the same noise in there as well. I assume this is a fault I just have to put up with? I wouldn’t care if my journey wasn’t for so long!

This is unfortunately pretty par for the course when it comes to the Turbos. I've noticed it tends to be worse in the declassified first class sections.
Hate to say it, but I would just put some headphones in and be glad the train is five carriages rather than two!

Thanks, I decided to do just that. The Wi-Fi isn’t working either. I really dislike travelling on these old Turbostars - they’re ok for short jaunts like the Greenford branch line but less so for longer distance journeys such as this one. Oh well!

It's interference in the audio circuits from one of the electrical parts of the unit's drive.
Not an uncommon fault on all kinds of traction, I had an almost unbearably loud instance on a German ICE last month. The rheostatic brakes on voyagers were a regular cause of this for years.

These aren’t Turbostars, but even older.
I’ve noticed this in cars and minibuses from the early 90s, that is the same age as the Turbos…

Some 80x, particularly Lumo's for some reason, have a horrible whine of this kind all the time. Rattles my ears.
The transmission on Class 158s produces a bit of a whine at times but I haven't noticed it on other 15x or 16x to the same extent, so it probably is the PA.

Different issue, but that noise is horrendous. It's to do with the cab cooling fan I believe but the unfortunate high pitched noise it makes is awful.
Indeed, shame it hasn't been fixed - seems to be something getting worse across the Turbo fleets over the years.

Seriously though, I do carry earplugs all the time now for train travel, they go in for all London Underground journeys, and when needed on DMUs.
