Stranded at Carlisle by TPE on 27/12

Hello all
I was travelling on the 10:04am TPE from Manchester Airport to Edinburgh on 27/12. Curtailed at Carlisle around 12.30pm and pretty much left to our own devices. After waiting 3 hours, ended up getting a taxi for £250 to Edinburgh. No idea of TPE will reimburse.
Could we not have some kind of charter or more clear guidance on what passengers can do in this circumstance?

Even in the sense of processing these claims and all the cost of doing so, never mind any vague sense of responsibility for the abandoned passenger or of customer service - surely it would be more efficient for someone to book these cabs for passengers on a TPE account ? I do sense that “incident involving displaced rail passengers” is really a terrible news story that is just waiting to happen. The common themes from this thread, the Avanti thread etc are that the sense of abandonment, lack of information, “sort yourselves out” is the thing passengers find most offensive, whilst most would have understanding of … wires down, train which needs electric wires cannot therefore move.

There have been various diverts and cancellations to flights in recent days too - but I wonder what percentage of domestic air travellers arrived at their destination on the intended day and within the rail delay repay window in 2023. I suspect with a combination of all the factors that have hit rail travel this year, the comparison would not look pretty.

The station would have been staffed; did you ask them what alternative would be provided?

Also did you try to contact TPE by phone or twitter etc?

Same thing happened to me about 2 years ago, some 4 hours later they got us a bus replacement.

There were what appeared to be general station staff, some uniformed police officers, and some uniformed Avanti staff. Don’t recall seeing TPE staff. All of the above 3 types of staff said the same thing, ie that they don’t know when, if at all, rail replacements would arrive, some added that 1 bus only caters for one carriage at best implying that would need a lot of these as yet to be confirmed RRBS.

Not defending the railway, but Wednesday 27th December 2023 was the day that the two railway lines from Carlisle into Scotland were flooded (at Sanquhar and at Lockerbie) and rail travel via Newcastle and up the ECML to Edinburgh wasn't possible either. Not the best day to have attempted to travel between England and Scotland by rail.

Weren't there also problems near to Edinburgh on Wednesday, as was previously discussed here, where LNER had essentially said "Do not travel"...

Storm Gerrit related disruptions-27/12/23

LNER has reported this morning that there is disruption to services in the Edinburgh area due to wire damage. Looking at the track map, there has been a North Berwick-Edinburgh been sat at Musselburgh since 9am, and TPE & LNER trains sat behind it at Wallyford and Prestonpans. It states...

It takes over 3 hours, but you could have used the X95 bus from Carlisle to Edinburgh. Every 2 hours on weekdays, stops outside "The Courts", a short walk from Carlisle station.
