Hi

My brother and I are planning a trip to Cardiff and we need some help with finding the cheapest tickets (and by cheapest I mean splitting/taking the National Routing Guide to the letter).

He has a YP but I do not have any railcards

Departing 21/7/17, returning 24/7/17.

Would prefer flexibility as I don't know (apart from the fact that we won't be travelling during the peaks) exactly what time we will be departing

The only problem is I don't, if I can help it, want to end up catching Class 150/153 units if at all possible as I have a slight problem and I know the conveniences on them are as small as a broom closet

Many thanks in advance

Firstly have you given trainsplit.co.uk a try?

Tried and got the following error message

Sorry, we cannot find any journeys/fares matching your search criteria. Please try later or earlier times if you have searched early in the morning or late at night or try just a timetable search.

To avoid any 150s an opening offer would be Stourbridge to Chelthenham route via Birmingham and then Cheltenham to Cardiff, off peak is 54.90

What times did you search for?

Departing around 1100 both days came up with an Off Peak Return to Cwmbran and singles each way between there and Cardiff for a £1.60 saving.

There's a saving to be had splitting at Ashcurch (off-peak returns both ways) - don't know about stock use for this unfortunately!

If that routeing involves Worcester to Ashchurch, then that leg of the journey could be either a 150,153 or 158.

IIRC going via Hereford during the day you could avoid booked150/153 workings, though there is currently a 150 booked on 1V25 BHM 1049 - HFD 1219 (see the Frequently Requested Diagrams thread).

However, there's always the risk of a substitution on the Marches line.
