They gave up at Perth at 04:32.
This service was cancelled between Perth and London Euston due to points failure as a result of severe snow (X9). http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/G97240/2015/01/14/advanced
Congrats and commiseration to the crews for a splendid effort.

Looks like they'll be another peak of high winds later this afternoon in Northern areas which could cause one or two issues.

If a portion of the Caledonian sleeper is cancelled for whatever reason, is the rest of the train also cancelled? If not and half of the train runs what happens to passengers who have booked the next night for the cancelled portion?

Just got off the Euston - fort bill sleeper, had to get the inverness portion to Kingussie, then rail replacement bus to fort William. The snow was two feet deep in places on the hml though, we were lucky to get through. Crew couldn't have been more helpful though, big thankyou and top marks for them.

That's definitely wont be happening, will be too warm by that point.

Main concern will be high winds.

So zero centigrade (which is forecast widely for the areas and times I mentioned) is too warm for snow? Anyway, the spell of snow which was included in yesterday's forecasts for the small hours of Sunday has now disappeared from the forecast, but the temperatures therein remain very low widely.

On a pedantic note, snowfall is very much dependant on a whole host of other factors, including dew points, cloud types, warm sectors of air, the position of the 528dam line, and various other technical meteorological factors. 0C may be an acceptable air temperature for snow at the specified altitude, but you may struggle to actually get snow to fall at that air temperature. I am sure you are aware of this, and the fickle nature of North Downs weather, from experience. But just in case those overhearing (or reading) our conversation are not... ;)

For what it's worth, the Met Office are indeed forecasting relatively low surface air temperatures of around -3C over some forthcoming nights, so I should imagine any moisture will need to be kept at bay with deicing trains. However, I can't see any significant snowfall on their public outputs for the Betchworth/Reigate/Redhill area.

Metal sheeting has blown onto the line between Middlesbrough & Redcar, with services from Darlington terminating at Middlesbrough and bus replacements requested to run to Saltburn.

Absolutely so. Anyway, all we'll need is another brief freezing rain shower to gum things up!

There were some interesting pictures of Rannoch on the Network Rail Scotland twitter feed! Lots of lovely snow

Pah, doesn't seem likely with a class 37 - but if they will insist on using those "dinky" 'ploughs then more fool them. ;) Whatever happened to the big snowplough they used to keep at Fort William then? ;)

They still have aerial photos up on the walls in the Bridge of Orchy hotel of trains in the vicinity being dug out of snowdrifts taller than the train in the days of class 37s in the late seventies/early eighties: With class 37s (and this is borne out by a mildly amusing call to control from a driver of a snow plough duty on the Hindlow quarry branch two winters ago), the job need only be stopped when the snow is above the cab windows.

No excuse to avoid the drive from London to Crawley for work then. Shame!

Highland Chieftain ran the full length of HML this morning but ScotRail trains not running.

CallySleeper's update:
Fort William portion still stuck in FTW but might run this evening depending on if the line reopens.
Up Inverness portion caped at Perth, not sure where it went after
Down Inverness portion made it to Inverness this morning
Therefore 1Z16 ran in path of 1M16 (up) this morning conveying only Aberdeen portion (+two extra Fort Will coaches?)
Euston - Edinburgh portion already cancelled this evening due to stock inbalance. Therefore I'm assuming that coaches that would be on Edinburgh portion will be used for Inverness (down).

The fact that 170s have no form of snow plough/object deflector can't help in these conditions. Although Scotrail 158s do have these, the fact there are so many restrictions on them running in snow due to brake problems can't help in these conditions.

156s, however...:D

Why did the Highland Chieftain run from Inverness when Scot Rail have given up running on the Highland Mainline? is it because of the size and weight of the HST used on the Highland Chieftain?

Yes, I know that place very well, and the (albeit fading) photos are a great record of that famous 'weather event'. Attached is my vehicle in the vicinity in about 1990, not fitted with plough!

Nothing is crossing the Tay Bridge - ScotRail trying to set up diversions via Perth so it could be a lengthy one. The road bridge has been closed for over an hour now.

Seeing on Twitter that a train stopped half-way across and reversed back to Leuchars.

A train hit a tree on the Uckfield line this morning, leading to its closure for several hours.

Some fascinating snow pictures can be linked to from the National Rail service disruptions page on their web site - including Bridge of Orchy buried!

Did I mention, I'm pretty surprised they tried to run the Inverness Sleeper last night in the first place.

HML still shut to ScotRail but this afternoon's Highland Chieftain looks like it's going to have a crack at it.

Meanwhile, did I mention there's a couple of new snow trains reportedly sat in a siding in Perth doing nothing?!

I was on the hst today from perth arrived running 80 min late staff advised it was signalling problems.

The 37 in the picture appears to be ploughing the West Highland Line after heavy snowfall with just the object deflectors/mini plough on the Loco. Why do they keep the proper ploughs and blowers if not to use in these conditions?
