I know its not a level playing between modes of transport but the railways are the safest form of transport in these conditions and by running at reduced speed the risks are considerably reduced.

True of course, but a major consideration nowadays, with more routes than ever having overhead electrification (OLE), is the very real risk of electric trains becoming stranded with OLE down and/or train pantographs damaged, resulting in trains and passengers having to be rescued; Difficult enough in normal conditions but a nightmare in extreme weather !

Caledonian Sleeper Highlanders cancelled tonight, although that's said to be as a result of "Storm Carrie". But an associated travel disruption due to the weekends severe weather.

A Crosscountry service has been sent North of Newcastle, presumably as a test. It ran as 1Z56 to Berwick-upon-Tweed, then 9S09 to Edinburgh. Looks to be going okay, although on the signal maps there’s ‘BLOK’ still in the berth just south of Dunbar on the Up line.

Interestingly they have cancelled the 1300 ex Edinburgh though at short notice. Do we think this is a stock shortage? You’d think they’d have known about it earlier if it was. Hopefully things are getting back up and running though. I must say they appear to have handled things very well as usual.

Probably due to stock ending up at different locations yesterday. Maybe LNER were waiting for the line to reopen before any decision was made.

ScotRail seemed to have cancelled all of their trains that depart their origin after 6pm, and any still running after that time will be subject to a 40mph speed restriction.

That will most likely because the line was late being handed back today following repairs to the overheads wires. The stock to work it should of formed a Newcastle to Edinburgh first which didn’t run.

See #49 yesterday. Scotrail being proactive.

I’m on 1S10 between Newcastle and Edinburgh. The waves certainly look quite big at the coast, I’m guessing strong winds are coming!

Onboard the tree, or onboard the overhead line? :D

Well, we were waiting for about an hour, then the train moved forward to rescue passengers from a stricken 333 going the other way. We did this then moved forward and rescued passengers from another 333 going the other way. Dropped them off at Skipton them were on our way arriving only two hours late.

A very slick and we'll organised operation. When one remembers the horror stories of people being stuck for several hours on trains, I think Northern did superbly in this instance.
Couldn't agree more Rob. Credit to all the staff involved yesterday.

That's not a lot of use if the railway then shuts down in such conditions, and particularly if the railway passengers have to be offloaded into buses. The A1 road from Newcastle to Edinburgh seems to have just carried on.

From Twitter :

Due to very strong winds from #StormCorrie, all ScotRail services will be withdrawn by 1800 this evening.

Except the A1 was closed for several hours yesterday in multiple places due to the storm.
Certainly between Edinburgh and Newcastle along with the A68, as this prevented buses from running.
A1 was also shut in County Durham due to overturned HGVs.
