Storm Herminia Disruption - 26/01 onwards

The effects of Storm Herminia are now starting to be felt as there are reports of flooding and trees blocking the railway across various part of the country. The South West of the country is the first to take the brunt of the storm.

Flooding has shut the line between Par and Newquay since this morning.

Severe flooding has blocked the line between Crediton and Barnstaple.

Flooding between Taunton and Castle Cary.

Strong winds and further heavy and perhaps torrential rain is due this evening and overnight, for a large part of the country.

I was wondering how we jumped from the letter 'E' of Storm Eowyn to the letter 'H' of Herminia and see the latter, not detracting from any likely damage as it certainly sounds nasty in some areas, is a Spanish named storm.

That's why. It's named by the Spanish weather service AEMET. Their previous storm was named Garoé, occurring only last week. Normally, Spanish storms and UK/Irish storms don't overlap.

Because it was named by the Spanish Metrological Office. This Storm was not deemed severe enough to be named by the UK/ROI/Dutch Metrological Offices, (they work together to name storms). The next name for a UK/ROI/Dutch Metrological Office named storm is Floris.

It's an excellent site - I have it open all the time to check what's going on globally, out of interest. -52C in Siberia and -60C in Greenland were recent high(low)lights!

Tree down blocking the up line between Horsley and Effingham Junction this evening. My 2D70 Guildford to Worcester Park got stranded at Horsley for well over an hour. Eventually departed +72 and turned back at Effingham Junction due to the delay.

Few issues on Southeastern this morning - tree down near Faversham, tree down at Frant, and a power supply issue on the Bexleyheath line (though not sure if the latter is weather-related).

Is this related to the least storm. I would imagine so.

A landslip between Three Bridges and Gatwick Airport means some northbound lines are blocked.

As a result, Southern and Thameslink services may be delayed by up to 10 minutes or revised.

Gatwick Express services are suspended in both directions.

Disruption is expected until the end of the day today.

They say to allow an extra 30 minutes to two from London Victoria to Gatwick Airport. I wouldn't have thought it would add that much time on but maybe if there are delays it is doing so.

It's because the up slow is closed, so everything that would use it is crossing to the up fast. Gatwick Express is cancelled completely. Pity a service can't be run just Victoria to Gatwick, but hey ho....
