I see Southern have now advised of a 50mph restriction on coastal routes. I've also come home to an emptied bin that's been blown over.

Storm Éowyn will affect Southern services until the end of the day on Friday 24 January.

The Met office have issued an amber weather warning, as part of Storm Éowyn, with very strong winds expected to continue until the end of the day on Friday 24 January. This will disrupt various routes across the Southern network.
How is it expected to affect Southern services?
An emergency speed restriction of 50mph will be implemented across the East and West Coastway as well as up to Preston Park, for the whole day.
Some services that normally travel between Brighton and Southampton Central will terminate at Bognor Regis.

Not sure when it was updated, but LNER now saying no trains north of Newcastle all day tomorrow, previously it was no trains after 11am I believe?

Sensible, avoids the risk of crews being stranded.

Depends if they decide to even staff the stations (that aren't 24/7) or not. Other things like depots and control rooms will probably still need to be staffed.

Possibly some DMU drivers will need to be in on frost protection duties.

Do not travel Halifax-Huddersfield seems a somewhat bizarre inclusion. It may be affected by services that interwork with it not operating, but that is a different issue

I’d imagine it’s in relation to the area between Bradley and Sowerby Bridge being quite heavily wooded and known for frequent tree fall

The last train I worked between Brighouse and Sowerby Bridge was late last year in similar wind conditions there was three trees that had fell on the line in the space of a few meters of track

Whilst there are no trains north of Preston tomorrow, the station can suffer wind damage, with sometimes all, or part of the station closed to passengers. Lets hope it will be OK tomorrow.

In light of the recent roof damage, only platforms 1-4 are open tomorrow for this very reason.

Northern have updated their service disruption list now:

Middlesborough – Whitby. Except for the following journeys being provided to support trips to and from schools:

• 0654 Middlesbrough- Whitby
• 0844 Whitby-Middlesbrough
• 1404 Middlesbrough-Whitby
• 1557 Whitby-Middlesbrough

Teeside and the North Yorkshire moors should be fairly protected from the worst of the winds. I don't think there's a risk.

I thought it was a nice touch to run the school services, we're talking about a really rural area where hiring taxis or a replacement bus would have been difficult.
The reasons why there can't be a passenger service are probably complex. It's never as easy as saying "Well, the weather's fine here, let's run a train service".

Avanti has eased its advice for North Wales today.
Yesterday there were to be no trains, but today the advice is to travel "only if absolutely necessary".
Today the first Holyhead-Euston 805 left normally at 0548 and has reached Llandudno Jn.

TfW never advised not to travel, and its first few trains, including the Mk4 set, left Holyhead on time.
The first Holyhead-Cardiff (1V90) has passed Chester, so the line must be operational.

Suggest that the window should be widened to at least a week afterwards (and before if known about long enough in advance) or at least allow a no-fee, no extra cost swap to advances for the same journey. More people are more likely to heed the advice if they’re not going to have to shell out a lot more to postpone to “this time next week” because advances are already 3 times what they paid. OK, so that’s the risk of buying an advance, but if the main aim is to make deciding not to travel (on the periphery) as painless as possible…

Interesting that Northern decided to try and keep Airedale/Wharfedale going with a full timetable, but cut the Harrogate Line to hourly despite the the former being very prone to trees falling and OHLE issues in recent storms.

All as normal down here on Teesside, successfully operated a full school operation this morning. Northern's Whitby school train seems to have made Whitby okay.

One wonders how the Glasgow Underground, which runs entirely in tunnel, has needed to be closed. Just when it might have been a useful service with any surface transport disruption.

Northern Ireland is now getting some quite challenging conditions.

All trains, buses & coaches are cancelled until a rather vague point this afternoon. All flights at Belfast City airport are cancelled until 3pm although amazingly some seem to be shown as operating from Belfast International. All schools, Universities and most shops are closed.

Its a WFH day.
Looking out the window I'd say the wind is stronger than I've seen here for a long time. I live in a natural hollow so I'm sheltered from the worst of the weather but it must be quite alarming in more exposed areas.
Looks like the Red Warnings were well judged.

Not a good day to be holding TPE's Stakeholder Conference in Liverpool! My TPE 7.14 was cancelled and then the EMR 7.36 (which disappeared from the CIS screen at Dore).

Many now going for an online option because they can't make it by train.
