Storm Darragh - 6/7th Dec

The following image os of three Status at Guildford station. One between platforms 6 and 7. One on platform 4 and one on platform 3.

Usual to see a train on platform 3 and 4 at the same time on a Saturday at this time.

The reason is as follows.

Guildford - Farncombe

A tree is blocking the railway between Guildford and Farncombe. Trains are unable to run on the line towards Haslemere. Disruption is expected until 13:00.

That's a good map... how does it cope with cancelled trains? I guess they just don't show, which gives a slightly misleading impression.

GWR are reporting that Westbury station is closed due to the station roof incurring significant damage.

I'm guessing it'll become open air platforms in the future? If it ain't there to begin with then it can't blow off...

Was that the footbridge preventing further westwards electrification?

I thought the footbridge at the western end of the platforms was quite a recent addition so seems odd that it would be a barrier to electrification. In any case isn't the feeder station for the juice at/near Thingley junction which is West of Chippenham?

It’s a pointless map, cancelled trains do show on the map and move as if they are real

Needs to get up to date, the amount of closed lines on it is horrendous.

If signalbox doesn't hear from a train, it just assumes it's running on time, so any closed lines where trains are sat and waiting will look normal on there as trains just go past while not moving at all.
It's fun to look at but pretty much useless in disruption like we have today.

The Cross City South from Birmingham New Street to Bromsgrove and Redditch is now closed due to a tree on the OLE.

Holyhead Port is closed to all ferry traffic until at least Monday. Irish Ferries' Ulysses collided with the berth ahead of the 02:40 departure this morning, but sailed with a delay.

I'm supposed to be going to Dublin on Wednesday morning. Bit concerned about that now.

Merseyrail Ormskirk line has had 2 or 3 trees down. They clear one and another falls. Parts of that line are very exposed to the wind blowing across.
Chester to Hooton is buses all day (decision made last night).
Level crossing failure at Ainsdale as well (though this isn't uncommon).

Waiting on an XC at Leeds, we’ve been told there’s a tree on the line between here and York. Unsure why we haven’t yet been sent round via Castleford as OpenTrainTimes shows TREE between here and Neville Hill

It is, I agree, however, I’ve seen many not divert due to crew not signing the route.

On this occasion you’re exactly right! Driver and guard both don’t sign. It sounds like somehow the tree is sat on the track, not affecting the OHLE, and a TPE guard and driver of a different train are clearing it as we speak!

Many do but enough don't that you regularly get XC services stuck. If the following unit has crew that do and are both singles they often couple up and divert.

Thank you for the heads-up on that. I assumed it was reliable, a schoolboy error at the age of 52.

I prefer the proper real time track layout signal maps but it takes so long to go through each of the sections to get an idea of how things are going out there.
The storm reporters on the weather forum I frequent are starting to report damage on the North East coast from Berwick down to Cleethorpes.

I made the exact same mistake as you when we had disruption up north, LNER were terminating at Edinburgh, but I live next to the Edi to Aberdeen line and Signalbox was showing services going by my house, despite nothing running all day! Very misleading website.

I find it unhelpful that the National Rail site is separating reports by TOC rather than incident - "Severe weather and Storm Darragh is affecting X services". Not everyone is on operator specific tickets, and many restrictions have been lifted anyway.

Great Western Railway is taking a battering this morning, apparently Chippenham footbridge has collapsed, blocking all lines. Advice at the moment is to go to Bristol Temple Meads to seek alternative travel arrangements

Trains are running through Chippenham now, so whatever happened can't have been too serious.

Seems quite typical for TfW.

Incorrect, misleading and contradictory information is par for the course. E.g. saying that services may be delayed or cancelled then further down staying that there are no trains running is standard.

I have no idea why they are talking about services between Radyr and Coryton when that is no longer a throgh service.
