Delay to my current train due to the storm (1625 GLC to EUS, curtailed from PRE) is minimal currently, less than ten minutes.

At Glasgow Central, everyone for London piled onto the delayed 1557 to Euston via B’ham which went around 1625, so the 1640 to Preston is nice and empty. Got Coach K to myself.

(oh and @hexagon789, the catering didn’t fold like it usually does. I got my pie ;))

Station displays were saying a tree is blocking the Atherton line, can't see that on any other data sources and the train I planned to get isn't cancelled (yet) but I've jumped on a bus in case it's right

The West Coast, Midland and East Coast Mainlines all have significant stretches of track through the amber warning area. I suspect it is going to be a difficult few days for the rail network.
Trains between Sheffield and London seem to be running normally so far.

Oh no, I’m sorry! Ex Glasgow? Mine is an empty Trent Valley express truncated at Preston tonight, so it’s quiet because all the London lot are on the one before, and it’s also Glasgow crew so no one was displaced by disruption. Speaking of the crew, absolutely charming, full kudos to them, even offered me seconds of dessert. I will feedback to Avanti and praise them on X tonight.

But I digress…
Large shed reported on the line near Madeley. (WCML, south of Crewe)
Goodness, that really will make things worse! I’m lucky I’m only going to Wigan myself, but there were plenty of people at Glasgow Central trying to get down to Euston.

Is that a complete block south of Crewe then?

1A56 15:32 Chester-Euston currently heading back north to Crewe, presumably to reverse, for example. It had previously set off towards Madeley.
1A56 is now heading back towards Madeley for the second time (108 minutes late), on the up slow this time. Down services have been going via Kidsgrove.
So looks like up slow lines are open at least from Crewe to Stafford.
Northbound services, eg 1S82 16:30 Euston-Glasgow, still going via Stoke.

Limited service of roughly:

1tph Birmingham Moor St-Marylebone
1tph Aylesbury Vale-Marylebone via Amersham
1tph Aylesbury-Marylebone via High Wycombe

Also reduced to 1 per hour between Oxford and Marylebone. Not sure of the reasoning behind that, every one of those trains has run, and on time, so far; Perhaps due to extra stops for other missing services?

Marches closure now extended, Newport - Shrewsbury. Limited road transport available, and that is encountering storm related road closures too.

Northern 15.48, 2S88, from Piccadiily diverted via Guiide Bridge due to tree down. Arrived in Sheffield 11 late and now 15 down at Chinley on way back.

However this morning it was being suggested both TPE and Northern would only operate alternate hours between Sheffield and Manchester from later today. So far they seem to be running all. East Midlands certainly aren't operating west of Sheffield. This frees capacity for any diversionary problems like for the fallen tree.

Tree down between Manchester Piccadilly and Airport, near Gatley, stranded 2A92 with no power due to OHLE tripping. Looks like a 1Z99 is on the way to rescue passengers.

Also a stopped train on the Rose Hill Marple branch, 2R23, not moved for 20 minutes now.

1J25 has hit a fallen tree near Bramley, so Leeds to Bradford Interchange blocked in that direction.

EDIT:
Also potentially an issue now between Stockport and Navigation Road, services stopped moving.

Other than Crewe - Birmingham stoppers everything else WCML is still diverting via Alsager.

The River levels page has a section called Nearby levels, one of which is rainfall. For want of an example I have picked location based on you location, and Bath Claverton is currently showing 2.8mm rain in last hour, or 11.5m in last 6 hours, or 23.0mm in last 24 hours
I’m not really sure why Bath is relevant given there were no speed restrictions imposed in the area. Perhaps that actually proves my point though. Bath has had 44mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours. That is 50% of the average rainfall historically in the last 31 days. Overall in the last 31 days we’ve had 176mm, over double the average. Despite this amount of rain there weren’t restrictions, but the line has closed due to flooding. In fact the Bath Claverton gauge you mention shows 53mm of rainfall now, as mentioned by others the severe weather and restrictions had not even started when you posted.

The forecast that was being worked off predicted up to 80mm of rain in some areas of the East Midlands, in high areas of South East Wales it was predicted there could be 150mm of rain. That is what I would call huge, especially in the time period it came down.

Rainfall gauges are helpful, but can only show the rainfall in one area, not the entire catchment area of the railway. However, as you mention them, within 4 I found the Shiptom Moyne Guage showing 108mm in the last 24 hours, 61mm of which in the last 6 hours. That certainly is a huge amount of rain.

As a note on the link you provided, I was looking at it this morning for work, only a handful of river levels were displaying dark blue (above normal level, flooding possible), if you look now you can clearly see there are a significant amount.

On the 19.07 from Marylebone to Moor St. Fingers crossed we’re out of the worst of it.

Is WCML still closed?

Was on the 16:07 from Newport to Paddington when it was cancelled about 17:00 at Bristol Parkway due to flooding.

I was heading to Paddington and colleague was heading to Reading. He decided to try via alternative route via Cheltenham. I said sod it booked hotel on company account and currently enjoying a pint. He’s still in Cheltenham.

Good luck to anyone trying to get anywhere tonight

Lots of speed restrictions and delays on wcml services.

The rain i went through on route to Manchester was pretty impressive! Roads were looking flooded as we went past!

On the TPE now and the train is really struggling to pull away from the small stations between stalybridge and Huddersfield. Very gentle acceleration and slow progress.

The good news is the trains are running if slowly so far!

Whereas in the cheap seats down the back of my Manchester train there weren't any seats due to cancellations

I'm not sure how many official Do Not Travel notices have gone out, but I wouldn't go anywhere I didn't absolutely need to on a day like this.
Well I was in Newport for work and was trying to get home. Wasn’t travelling for any frivolous reasons

We’ve had constant heavy rain for nearly 4hrs by this point (York/Wetherby/Leeds). Roads not doing too badly for surface water but the spray, winds and other drivers are making driving treacherous.

Oh I wasn't having a go. Most people have reasons for travelling, but it's getting to the stage where if you can cancel your plans you should.

Also bare in mind it has been relatively quite dry up until recently, so there was probably a fair bit of capacity in the surrounding land. So another huge deluge on top of a sustained increase in above average rainfall will likley leading to flooding.

Weather forecasting is very good these days, but there will still be local-level anomalies that don't precisely match the forecast.

Sounds like he did by booking a hotel (through work).

Saw the forecast a few days ago and was concerned about my trip on the ECML up to Leeds and then onto Guiseley this evening, especially after having the same journey abandoned after an ECML closure due to flooding a few years ago.

We picked up a few minutes of delays in the Retford area before having to wait outside Leeds for 10 minutes due to congestion, but otherwise the journey was smooth luckily.

It was noticeable that the number of delay announcements over the tannoy were increasing while I waited at Leeds.

Just wanted to say safe travels to everyone using or working on the railways this evening. It’s not nice out there!

Not the best day for Yoda to start his work experience at Leeds station.
