Whereas this doesn’t really affect me, it irritates that some totally disregard road signs thinking that they are either wrong or more likely don’t apply to them.

ROAD CLOSED - FLOOD

Rugeley Trent Valley railway station.
Those who know this station will know the road by the station dips under the railway bridge. The road is in a hollow, next to he River Trent and is very prone to flooding. It gets pretty deep. The footpath is raised approx 18”/2feet above the road and this is often underwater as well.

As you can guess from the recent rainfall the road is well flooded. There is (or was) a car marooned. There are signs off the nearby roundabout saying ‘ROAD CLOSED - FLOOD’

Does this stop drivers? No….

On my walk this morning I spent a few minutes watching cars manoeuvring around the sign, drive towards the bridge only to have to 3-point turn and drive back.

It would be amusing if it wasn’t so bloody stupid.

It would wouldn't it. Although it is enjoyable to watch stupidity in action.

I understand the flooding also contributed to a former pub, "The Yorkshireman " which seemed to vary between very good and "not so good"....and pricey at times, closing

However, you missed out the two little flood cousins...the corner of Power Station Rd / Station Rd mini roundabout...where people just blast through and under the WCML bridge at Armitage...this can get quite deep, but no deterrent to those you correctly define in your post.

If the surface is clean, dry, and you can get the gaffer tape to stick, it would keep water out. Better applied on the expected 'wet' side of the problem. I have known a few kayaks be patched up that way (pending plastic welding).

I clicked that link, X opened and crashed my Dell laptop, which is almost unprecedented.
About 20 years ago in Morocco we crossed a long causeway in a coach driving through shallow (but flowing) water. We were told that the previous week it had got through when the water was deeper by emptying the luggage space underneath and proceding with the doors open both sides to let the water in one and out the other!

When the water outside is about half a metre high, it is likely to start bubbling up through vents, airbricks, etc.

Normal masonry is at risk of collapse once the external water height difference is about 1 metre (this is a "pressure" of about one ton (per unit area) at the base of the water (yes I know, units and forces being described loosely)
