Didn’t know where else to post this so thought I’d post it here - just a general, relaxed thread posting all things relevant to Storm Babet, discussing both in real time, as well as forecast conditions expected over the next few days.

Feel free to discuss how conditions are where you are, as well as in places which are expected to get hit particularly bad.

Trains to Oban cancelled after a tree fell on the line. Scotrail services to Fife cancelled all day today due to the forecast impact of Storm Babet.

It’s been dry all day here in Nottinghamshire with a warm breeze. There’s an amber warning for rain here from lunchtime tomorrow until Saturday morning. That is a bit worrying because the ground is already very wet and there were large puddles on some of the country lanes this morning following last nights rain.

Had a warning from Northern Powergrid last night about the storm, the power went out at about 23:30 despite the storm having not arrived yet. Was restored at 0300. Apparently a recurring fault in a local substation that I'm not expecting to be properly repaired between now and the next glacial maximum!

The red warning for eastern Scotland has been renewed. Sadly there have been a couple of fatalities.

A van driver was killed by a falling tree near Forfar as Storm Babet unleashed high winds and torrential rain.

A second person has died as Storm Babet brought high winds, torrential rain and severe flooding to parts of Scotland.
The Met Office has now issued a new red "danger to life" weather warning for some eastern areas.
Police have confirmed that a falling tree hit a van near Forfar in Angus on Thursday, killing the 56-year-old driver.
The body of a 57-year-old woman who was swept into a swollen river was also recovered on Thursday evening.
A search is also ongoing in Aberdeenshire after reports that a driver was trapped by floodwater overnight.
The storm has brought severe flooding to some areas on north east Scotland, with rescue operations continuing in and around the Angus town of Brechin.
Rescue teams went door to door by torchlight during the night to help people to safety.
Angus Council said they were still responding to more than 100 calls from people who had stayed in their homes despite warnings to evacuate.
Flood defences in the town were overwhelmed at about 04:00, with river levels 4.4m (14ft) higher than normal and continuing to increase.

It's been pretty wet here in Hereford today, I've seen a lot of big puddles around the city but I've not investigated what it looks like with the River Wye yet. More heavy rain due tonight/early hours of tomorrow, so it will be interesting to see what happens. Fortunately, my side of the city should be relatively safe and I feel extremely lucky not to be terribly affected

I certainly feel for those who are in far worse areas, hopefully everyone here will be all good

TUI says it is "fully assisting" air crash investigators after a Boeing 737 came off the runway.

A holiday jet skidded off a runway as it came in to land amid wet and windy conditions as Storm Babet swept the UK.
The TUI flight from Corfu "moved off the runway whilst landing" at Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA) on Friday afternoon, the firm said.
The airport said it was working with emergency services to evacuate passengers safely.
West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said there were "no reported injuries or fires".

My colleague lives along the Wharfe. During her time in my class this AM, the water level rose by 0.8m.
Headteacher said the rain at 3am was more akin to a sheet of rain or bucket being poured than anything she’s ever seen.

Thankfully so far, the afternoon has been kind in Hereford and the heavy rain is close to causing some places to be impassable without wellies, in others they are already flooded but in the case of the subway near Aldi there are alternatives. I didn't get to the River Wye in the end, but when the rainfall comes down from mid Wales that's going to be an interesting situation.

Certainly expecting places like Ross-on-Wye to be heavily affected by flooding, likewise Hay-on-Wye. The south side of Hereford, that's going to be a potential situation too but so far I've not heard of problems today

It's fair to say I wasn't expecting major problems in Herefordshire, but that seems to be exactly what I got! Thankfully it's not impacted on my day off too much, as I managed to get the outdoors stuff I needed to get done all cleared

Heard quite a loud bang around 6am this morning, one of those things that wakes you up but your not sure if you really heard it!
Checked out the windows and initially didn't notice anything till I took a double take at the chimney, the TV aerial was missing, pole sheared clean off just above the bracket!

In Wirksworth, Derbyshire, there's quite severe flooding. It's been heavy rain all day, and it was up to 2ft deep on some roads this morning, and I wouldn't like to think how much there is now. The A6 is closed at multiple points, and the AA says not to travel unless it's essential.

Buxton in Derbys is OK, a little wet. Line to Manchester is down due to a fallen tree and flooding. Whaley Bridge and Furness Vale have standing water in places, but it is still raining heavily in the High Peak, so expect this to get worse.

Whereas this doesn’t really affect me, it irritates that some totally disregard road signs thinking that they are either wrong or more likely don’t apply to them.

ROAD CLOSED - FLOOD

Rugeley Trent Valley railway station.
Those who know this station will know the road by the station dips under the railway bridge. The road is in a hollow, next to he River Trent and is very prone to flooding. It gets pretty deep. The footpath is raised approx 18”/2feet above the road and this is often underwater as well.

As you can guess from the recent rainfall the road is well flooded. There is (or was) a car marooned. There are signs off the nearby roundabout saying ‘ROAD CLOSED - FLOOD’

Does this stop drivers? No….

On my walk this morning I spent a few minutes watching cars manoeuvring around the sign, drive towards the bridge only to have to 3-point turn and drive back.

It would be amusing if it wasn’t so bloody stupid.

It is strange seeing all this on the news, it has been really nice weather in Manchester the last few days although a bit windy. It seems we have missed the worst of it.

Catcliffe area in Rotherham has suffered again from Flooding, a repeat of 2007. There was supposed to have been flood defence work carried out but it clearly needs additional work to try & stop this occurring again.

It is strange seeing all this on the news, it has been really nice weather in Manchester the last few days although a bit windy. It seems we have missed the worst of it.

The main cause was a strong moisture-laden easterly wind blowing across the UK: these winds hit the high ground of the Cairngorms, Pennines, Peak District, etc., where most rain was released. Manchester being on the leeward side would have avoided the high rainfall totals for this reason, although given the prevailing wind is normally a westerly, more often than not the effects are the other way round.
