Vehicles 64710+64720 will be leaving Eastleigh 05/11 by rail to Southampton Docks. They will then make a journey by road to their new homes. GBRf will carry out the rail movement. Timings to follow when available

However from WillPS's perspective that presumably means it is no longer possible to make up actual units, as those are all driving car numbers?

It does seem from earlier lists that all the centre cars of the sub-class have definitely been scrapped, but can that be confirmed?

All centre cars of the class 508/2 and 508/3 subclasses yes. There remain of course the class 508 centre cars is the 508/1 and 455/7 sets.

Eastleigh 508 Update:

There are no immediate plans for the remaining three vehicles.

The two vehicles under conversion should be completed by February next year

Update at 03/02/14

Vehicles 64680 and 64723 may be leaving for pastures new in February. No other detail yet other than they will go by rail to Southampton Docks, then onto lorries.

The project involving 64707 and 64664 is nearing completion.

A quick update on the 508 situation at Eastleigh

The project involving 64664 and 64707 is all but completed. Both vehicles are under test with a departure expected in late June. Nameplates will also be fitted, in the coming weeks.

Three vehicles remain in store at Eastleigh as spares donors. These are
64667, 64680 and 64723. They will likely be scrapped at some point in late2015

Vehicles 64710 and 64720 are currently at BTS/Ilford. the vehicles are for demonstration purposes, having been stripped of all traction equipment prior to their departure.

Stored 508 vehicle 64667 has been stripped of all reusable parts and will soon be scrapped at Eastleigh. The bogies will also be retained as spares.

Vehicles 64710 and 64720, currently held at BTS Ilford, will be leaving shortly for disposal, destination likely to be Kingsbury.

Would anyone happen to know which of the stored 508 vehicles remain in 1 piece?

As I pointed out earlier in the thread, I hope someone isn't still thinking of a cascade plan for them...

Island line would hit the roof if they were told to operate those ;)

64710 has arrived at Kingsbury. 64720 will be held for a short while elsewhere but has a similar fate

Don't believe everything on Wikipedia - there aren't even 5 Class 508/2 sets in existence!

I do treat most info with caution, but that is beyond normal 'inaccuracy'.

I did read a few weeks ago someone was making intentional spoof edits in the rolling stock sections, I guess this must be one of them?

By the way, do people think it is realistic to refer to "508207" as being "in departmental use", as it is no longer an EMU as such, but a pair of translator cars specificly designed for that generation of EMU stock?

The vehicles are indeed departmental. They do not carry traditional departmental numbers simply because there were none available from RSL, and it would have created unnecessary re-design paper work. They retain a lot of the original EMU equipment but all traction capacity has been removed so they could not work as EMUs. They are compatible with all Tightlock and Dellner coupling vehicles so are capable far beyond EMUs of 'their generation'.

At this time they languish at Eastleigh whilst a number of paperwork issues are concluded but they should enter service by year end.

i do find the current system regarding the (lack of) renumbering of most departmental vehicles somewhat confusing, particularly as occasioanlly, vehicles get renumbered, even though the majority don't. After privatisation there was a large gap in time between 977xxx numbers being allocated, then some were (NMT HST stock comes to mind), and when the series became full, the 971xxx series started being used briefly. From memory, the highest allocated so far has been 971004. I guess as Barriers, they'd receive numbers in the more normal coaching stock series (63xx being used for this sort of stuff - 6366 & 6367 perhaps) if renumberings were to have taken place.

Some would say that translator cars are departmental vehicles...

Well their designation is T7 and that's what the industry refers to them as.

50047, can you confirm 64667, 64680, 64720, 64710, 64723 are scrapped now?

I'd like to know the disposal dates & locations if you have them.

Thanks.

Too high for the tunnel surely?

There are a number of infrastructure issues with taller, longer vehicles - no obvious showstoppers but the costs would add up.

It's worth looking at the loading guage diagram in Mark Brinton response to the idea of using T69 trams.
