I am booked Paddington - Truro First Class Advance, on Wednesday 9th July, with 40 mins there before I return.

If the train out is late or just fancy getting off at St Austell, will this be ok? And are there ticket barriers at St Austell?

What ticket do you hold exactly? You say you hold an 'advance return' yet advances are issued as singles...

Mikeg, its Advance singles, out on 12.03 Paddington-Truro and 16.55 Truro-Paddington, so have 40 mins Truro. I’ll go Truro if on time but if more than approx 20 late ill get off at St Austell.

I’d say to train manager on return train that my out bound train was late, and would get out bound ticket stamped etc so could get off St Austell. I have followed the 12.03 Paddington-Penzance on RTT and it seems to average 5-10 mins late in Cornwall, so dont expect a problem, but just checking in case of delays on the day.

jfollows, in case missed anything what are things not to say? Have not had problems getting off short in case of delay etc, so far in my travels.

That seems fine to me, enjoy your trip wherever you end up getting off!!

There are no barriers at St Austell, so I wouldn't expect any problems. That being said, technically speaking breaking your journey on a ticket where it's not permitted (e.g. an Advance Single) renders you liable to pay the excess (difference) to the cheapest fare that permits break of journey.

Given that the cheapest first class fare permitting break of journey would be the Anytime 1st Single costing £234.70 that would be rather a pricey excess...

Industry guidance says that the break of journey restrictions shouldn't be enforced unless there is evidence of intent to avoid a higher fare - and as mentioned, I think you would be fine in practice. But it's worth knowing about.

Watershed, Im booked to Truro and St Austell is cheaper fare, so not avoiding higher fare if stop short at St Austell, and its more to do with making return train if out bound train pretty heavily delayed, than anything else. So from what been said i should be ok.
