Stopping short on CDR

If I travel from St Albans City to Liverpool Street on a cheap day return it costs £16.30 for a cheap day return to Zone 1/2. The route is to Farringdon by Thameslink and then on the tube to Liverpool Street.

If I get a CDR to Stratford (SRA) it is only £14.10 and I can take the same route to Liverpool Street and then continue overground to Stratford via Greater Anglia.

I know break of journey is allowed on a CDR but is there anything to say I have to complete the journey. Can I stop short at Liverpool Street and start short on the way back? Presumably there wouldn't be a problem at the TFL gateline when I enter and exit the tube at Liverpool Street.

No problem - "break of journey" is shorthand for starting or stopping short as well as breaking and resuming a journey.

Have you considered buying a ticket to Bethnal Green rather than Stratford? This is only £13.10 but allows you to stop short at Liverpool Street

Thanks! I hadn't thought of that.

I also noticed there is a £14.10 St Albans to Esher CDR which allows travel via many London terminals like Victoria, Waterloo and Charing Cross. Not only is it cheaper than the £16.30 Zone 1/2 CDR to those stations it has a TS restriction which DOES allow travel back in peak time - unlike the normal Thameslink tickets which bear the draconian LS restriction.

In my experience, in the majority of cases, it is cheaper to buy to a National Rail destination with a cross-London transfer than to pay the Zone U1 supplement, which is currently £3 each way.
