I understand that diesel (not for road use) is currently about 60p/litre, down from 70p/litre last year, so that's £12,000 saved.20000 litres sounds like a lot, but actually it's hardly anything. Given that the fuel tank capacity is 6400 litres this engine has, in about 7 or 8 months of operation, saved approximately 3 tanks full of fuel. I don't know what these locos consume on average each week but I suspect that the figure is more than 20000 litres per week, so this figure probably only represents a saving of around 3%.
Come back Westerns and Warships all is forgivenI have advocated before the use of a prime mover that could operate on just half the number of cylinders to produce the power of a Type 3 loco when running light or lightly loaded but then fire up the other half when the additional power is needed.

As far as the cab heating goes, there's 2 words to very easily solve that (and really very cheaply, compared to the cost of a loco): Webasto or Eberspacher.
It is however reasonable to draw the comparison when discussing the development of diesel technology. The road haulage industry would never tolerate diesels in trucks that didn't start reliably every day. Even more so, one of the earliest diesel applications was in submarines in World War 2, they would operate underwater on batteries in the day to avoid detection, then surface each night and start the diesel to charge the batteries. It would never have been acceptable halfway across the ocean to have the diesel unlikely to start. And that was a couple of generations ago.Why are people quoting stuff about their diesel cars having stop/start capability and "it works fine"?

They have got 3 or 4 other engines so one out is pretty much a non event!Voyagers running with an engine not operating are apparently an everyday occurrence.
Up to now they have been running almost continually and the only time they are shut down they are allowed to cool (maintenance or stabling overnight etc), trying to start a hot engine takes a lot more effort from the starter motor(s), effort they havent had to make on many occasions before but now they are going to be doing it possibly dozens of times a day!There's all sorts of concerns that once a diesel loco shuts down it won't restart easily and consistently. Why not?
all the RHTT formations I've seen have had both locos working in multiple at all times.

You are correct, 66s used on RHTT formations are in multiple, the RHTT has a 27 way through jumper. This arangement saves changing the brake to 'dead loco' on the trailing engine, with the possibilities of driver brake mismanagement.

I cannot imagine that a dropping air pressure would not cause an automatic restart in just the way that I and others have already described.
Stabled locos being inadequately secured and wandering off on their own is an entirely different matter.

Effectively they must treat it as a loco in service not a stabled loco.
Of course. Isn't that what we're talking about? Locos in service waiting in loops and at signals with the driver onboard, not locos shutdown and parked up unattended in the sidings?
I agree, but post #23 suggests there could be some confusion on this point. If a stop-start system had been in use at Lac Megantic then the train would still have run away if the loco that was supposed to start had still caught fire and been shut down. Or had failed to start for any other reason.

And why trial it on china clay workings? Are they typical in the amount of time they spend idling or do they stand for much longer periods?
