I've noticed at Hayes & Harlington station (GWML) that the London bound stop boards are quite a way along the platform from the entrance, leading to a long walk (or run if you're late) along the platform. I was guessing there must be an operational reason for this, but I was wondering if anyone in the know can tell me what it is?

TIA.

Its probably to do with the HST SDO use, which will platform as many standard class vehicles are possible.

This is the case in a lot of London locations which is starting to annoy me. I regularly have to make a dash between two platforms on my commute home and my two coach unit always stops at the far end on the platform, forcing me to walk the entire length just to access the footbridge and forcing nearly everyone on the platform to run up to the train!!

HSTs don't stop there. It's only 165/166s and 360s.

Twyford is another irritating one. There's currently a temporary footbridge at the far end of the platforms while the other one is being rebuilt. Seeing as this is the only exit from the island platform, surely it wouldn't hurt them to temporarily move the stop boards a bit closer? I'll give it a mention at the next Paddington "meet the managers" session and see what they say

Platform 7 at Edinburgh Waverley is another one. The 3 car stop sign is located almost at the Eastbound signal. Fair enough for Eastbound trains. But when you're booked to come in and go out to/from the West, it's a long walk for no reason...

BTW, this platform can take an NXEC train, just to give you ann idea how long it is!

its probley all to do with stopping short on platforms, you may stop at for examle at a 4 car board with an 8 car, and leave 4 of the platform(big no no in the industry), so if all trains stop in the same place it stops stopping short.

Surely though by that logic that would apply at all stations.

I mean, at Hereford we generally, but not excluding owt on the basis it may show up, get 158s, 170s, 175s and HSTs. And I ought to add the HSTs only just fit into platform 3 and have a very tough mission to stop safely in platform 1 when they terminate there due to the signal position.

Everything else stops at the 2/4 car marker. Only HSTs go past that.

Nothing to do with the provision of DOO equipment is it? If the equipment is provided, you have to provide it at every stopping point...so the more you have, the more expensive the provision is!

As a 360 driver i can answer this one ;)

It is because of the DOO equipment on the platform, when we operated 4 car 360's we had special signs made (at horrendous cost i might add!) attached to a lamppost. now all our 360's lengthened to 5cars we use the existing DOO equipment for the length of our train hence why we stop at the end of the platform at Hayes for the DOO cctv (which incidently doesn't work for ours!!! so manual lookback is used),
At Southall we use the CCTV screens at the end of the platform much to the delight of the locals who all try to jump into car 5 all 400 of them lol!!
Hanwell and West Ealing the screens work, although EB is a bit hit an miss sometimes!
Down services use DOO mirrors at all stns except hanwell;)

One of the reasons for FGW turbo's stopping at the last stop point (slough for instance) regardless of length of train, is due to an incident quite a few years ago when a 6 car unit (2 coupled) stopped in the middle of P2 and released doors only to find that car 6 and i think car 5 weren't on the platform and you guessed it some pillock opened the door and down they went!
In the good old days one always checked to see if you were on the platform before opening such door and leave the train, nowadays we have to assume that all pax are thick ****s willing to sue at first instance so we get procedures like this;)
