Stoke to Reading weekend first

On 12th January I plan to use the above route.i will be splitting tickets

Stoke to Stafford £6
Stafford to Leamington Spa £18.70
Leamington Spa to Banbury £7.50
Banbury to Reading not via London £11.20

All 2nd class off peak returns, can I buy just 1 weekend first upgrade as all legs will be on the same train?

My concern is it being a busy train and not getting a seat reservation for short legs. Or is their a reasonable way of doing this journey 1st class cost wise?

XC first upgrade is on a per-train basis. As long as you are on the same train, you will only need to pay the upgrade once.

It may be worth showing all of your tickets and specifically asking for the upgrade to be given to Reading.

I did a weekend first upgrade on TPE once, when splitting tickets, and the 'ticket' I was given was only for the first part of my journey (I had shown both tickets).
That wasn't a problem for me, but if the train crew changes en-route then it might be.

Simon11, do you have evidence for this assertion?

It does not correspond with my experience - on three occasions a train manager on XC has been happy to sell me a £15 Leeds - Bristol First Class Weekend Upgrade when I have been using a combination of Standard Off-Peak Return tickets for that journey.

No you don't. I agree with Pumbaa. Upgrades are sold on a per journey basis, not a per ticket basis.

Have reviewed a few documents, there isn't any evidence backingup my point(which I seem to remember reading a few months ago) so I would believe that you guys are correct.

If you were excessing the tickets - i.e. If weekend first were not available - then you would excess the tickets for the part you wish to travel 1st. Weekend first is by train though.
