Hi

For this Saturday, need to arrive in Aldershot for 2pm ish and leaving at 5pm. I presume there is no sensible split for this journey as it is via London?

1 adult, no railcards (I'm prepared to stop at Milton Keynes for instance though and buy a network railcard if that's an option as I will make quite a few journeys to the South East in the next 12 months)

I presume a London Midland train and a change in Milton Keynes is an option. Not that I'm confident in them running all of their trains!

Any advice appreciated.

I suspect using LM Only tickets will be of limited use as the last LM train back to Stoke (SOT) leaves Euston at 1846, which could be tight. I'm having a look...

Actually no, you should be fine - 1704 from Aldershot gets to Waterloo 1757. Split in London it's £26.00 Super Off Peak Return LM Only SOT-EUS and £10.10 London-Aldershot (AHT) with Network Railcard, coming to £36.10, exclusive of railcard cost - this is cheaper than splitting at Milton Keynes. To get across London, a Zone U12 London-AHT is £14.60 would cover your Tube journey (making a total of £40.60 for the trip), or use Oyster at £2 per journey, or walk - it's fairly straightforward between Euston and Waterloo, though you'd be better off on the Tube on the return journey since you can't afford to miss that train.

Alternatively you could travel via Reading to North Camp or Ash, I can't quite get this cheaper than £36 though.

If I am correct and you are visiting the mighty Aldershot Town FC, make sure you are heading to the exit well before the end of the game if you are catching the 17:04 as suggested. The station is not far, but it can get very busy.

If your happy to spend an additonal £5 making the total cost £45.60, which would allow you more time to get out of the ground to the station after the match then choose this option.

West Midlands Day Ranger £21.60 ( Will cover you Stoke - Leamington Spa)
Leamington Spa to Banbury Off Peak Day Return £7.50 Any Permitted
Banbury to Aldershot Off Peak Day Return £16.50 Not Via London

Times :

Outward

Stoke 1007 - Reading 1239
Reading 1304 - Ash 1337
Ash 1340 - Aldershot 1347

Return

Aldershot 1730 - Ash Vale 1734 ( Walk to North Camp 10min walk)
North Camp 1756 - Reading 1819
Reading 1819 - Birmingham New Street 2018
Birmingham New Street 2031 - Stoke 2120

Hope this helps.

Or £40.00 with Network Railcard (BAN-AHT £10.90). This is probably what I'd do given the necessity of making the 1704 with the LM option. You could also walk direct to North Camp to pick up the 1756 if you're fit, it's around 45 mins (doesn't save any money but potentially avoids the crowds at Aldershot station).

Your return journey should have a 1840 depart from Reading though, would be a bit tight if it were 1819! There's also a direct train from Reading to SOT at 1911 (also 1811, keep a look out in case it's running a bit late).

I always forget about the WMDR!

Learnt something new with the West Midlands Day Ranger! Is this available for online purchase or do I have to buy at the station? Also I presume there is no issue with picking up a train from North Camp to Reading as part of a Banbury to Aldershot return?

Most Rovers & Rangers are only available from ticket offices or telesales - sure someone will advise if it is possible to buy online. No problem with starting/stopping short at North Camp (in either direction).

As the initial post was from a Vale fan, the West Midlands day rover is also valid from Longport which may save him or any fellow fans the taxi fare to Stoke? However, it would mean a 9.27 start from Longport. I'm sure the East Midlands guard would be delighted to sell all the tickets now there are no fare manuals involved these days, and the 5% is better in the guards pocket than the companys!! If all goes to schedule, there is a very handy 21.34 back to Longport too.
