Am I right in thinking the above ticket can be bought on the day or does it have to bought online in advance. Also will staff at Manchester be able to issue it?

Yes can be bought on the day (LM only though remember) and yes they should be able to issue it at Manchester.

I bought them at Macclesfield and reserved seats in advance in Novmber and they are walk on tickets so you can also buy them on the day.
Do bare in mind thought that BOJ is not permitted except to change trains

Stoke - Euston on LM is generally 2hours 55 Southbound,2 hours 27 Southbound
two exceptions are
1546 EX EUS (2hours 52)
1829 NS EX EUS (2h36) avoids Stafford and calls at some local stations between WFJ-NMP (Class 2 service)
