Stockport to Guildford - thoughts?

Hi all,

Im travelling down to Guildford from Stockport on saturday 21st December and returning Sunday. I am armed with a PRIV ticket being a driver, but I wanted the opinions of those of you in the know for the best route.

I could drive it in 4 hours, but thats 450 miles on my car and £80 in fuel, plus I am driving down to Sidcup xmas eve so thought i'd let the train take the strain for the first trip.

Currently, I'm thinking either:

Stockport (10:28) - Doncaster (11:35) via TPE (£4.48 with Priv);
Doncaster (12:07) - London Kings Cross (13:45) via GC (Free as Northern employee);
Walk to St Pancras, FCC leaving (14:04) to Blackfriars (14:16) - Priv - 65p! ;
Walk to Waterloo (15 mins according to TFL);
London Waterloo (14:45) to Guildford (15:23) via SWT (£3 with Priv).

Total time 4hrs 55mins, and £8.13

OR

Stockport (11:35) - Reading (14:40) via XC (uncomfortable smelly trains I believe?) - £19.38 with PRIV,

Reading (15:04) - Guildford (15:47) via FGW - £3.08 with Priv.

Total time 4hrs 12mins - £22.46.

The first route is cheaper, but longer and more faffing.

Sunday is easy, train to Waterloo, LU (£4.40 grrr) to Euston and back to Stockport via VT if I can find a nice train manager (Northern pass to clear gateline at Stockport)

Isn't that Up? (at least most of the way!)

Seriously though, the 1st route sounds better to me, XC are best avoided!

Also you may well find yourself on an earlier train from St Pancras, in which case take it, and you may well end up on an earlier train out of Waterloo. If the train you take from St Pancras goes to London Bridge, you may as well stay on the train, cross platform (5 to 6 - no stairs) and take any train towards Charing Cross to Waterloo East.

If you didn't want to walk from Blackfriars to Waterloo and go straight from London Kings Cross to Waterloo via the Underground then a :

Kentish Town - Guildford SDS +ANYPERMITTED £3.40

Would be valid to do the above and saves an additional 15p

Probably best to do that.

As for King's Cross - Waterloo: Leave the station at the front, out through the new square, into the LU station, head for southbound Victoria Line, change at Oxford Circus. This is cross-platform with southbound Bakerloo (ie, no stairs/escalators at Oxford Circus).

Yes perfectly fine, the Maltese cross on the ticket allows a cross London journey.
