Stockport Sig St2.116/118

Hello, I was at Stockport the other day waiting for a train on platform 2 when I saw a train not stopping going through platform 3 and a few minutes later the same train came into platform 2 after reversing. on real-time trains it says it reverses at Stockport Sig St2.116/118 I'm wondering if anyone knows where that is

I believe this would be just outside the station on the viaduct. I can't find a Signal 116 or 118 on opentraintimes but it could be where the shunt 117 is to signal the move back into the station.

116, 117 & 118 will be different levers applicable to different routes from one ground signal. It used to be two mechanical discs mounted one above the other, but the last resignalling replaced the mechanical ground signals with colour light ground signals (so it will now be a single ground signal with route indicator). One of them (I guess 116) will be the route over points 97R and 98R (R - reverse) which gets the train across to the up side and platform 2 as you saw.

Ah, yes, this is the empty stock for 2D53 17:54 Stockport-Chester, which comes from Hazel Grove. It’s not possible to go south from platforms 3 or 4, hence the need to reverse behind the ground signal over the viaduct. The other Stockport-Chester service comes empty from Newton Heath so doesn’t have the same problem.

No, they reverse on the down fast on the viaduct behind ground signal 116/117/118 before crossing to the up fast and into platform 2.

Under the numbers are the lists of other levers required to enable the signal levers to be pulled. 116 shows 98 and 97 as one option - this gives the route into platform 2 you saw. 76 and 83 in addition give a route into platform 1 instead.
