The Manchester Evening News has reported that disruption likely until 1230 today (10/10/2014)

It also mentions Virgin trains were unable to call at Macclesfield, anyone know why that couldn't happen?

Tragedy as person plunges from Stockport Viaduct

Train services through Stockport have been seriously disrupted tonight after a person fell from a bridge in the town centre.

Emergency services were called to Stockport Viaduct near the town’s bus station just before 10.30pm tonight.

It is understood that a person has fallen from the bridge and suffered serious injuries.

Train services running through Stockport station were halted at Stoke and Manchester stations with delays to Virgin and Arriva train services.

Virgin Trains were also not stopping at Macclesfield station during the incident.

Delays were predicted to continue until around 12.30am Friday morning...

I believe some services where diverted via slade lane junction and then towards styal and wilmslow and then onto crewe which misses out Stockport but also Macclesfield

I am unsure Wether Virgin traincrew have this route knowledge but if they did then they would have gone that way to avoid stockport .

Virgin has route knowledge via Styal.

The services I believe went via Kidsgrove, Alsager and Crewe missing out Macclesfield and Stockport.

Virgin certainly haev route knowledge via Styal. The last London to Manchester of the day on weekdays can sometimes be diverted this way due to overnight engineering works at Stockport.

There is one booked journey - 1H74 - which goes via Styal on a weekday.

And is also frequently used for booked diversions between Preston and Crewe when the route via Warrington is closed.

No problems heading through Stockport towards Manchester at half 8 this morning, I'm glad to say.

However, the 17:05 Manchester - Cardiff was turned back at Stoke this evening to divert via Longport and Crewe, due to, apparently, a line blockage between there and Stafford: Does anybody know what that was about, and how long the incident went on for?
