I've been thinking for a while of having a trip along the Crewe-Chester line having not done it for a while and considering I live in Manchester I was wondering wether either a Manchester or Stockport-Chester ticket would be valid via Crewe.

Yes. Both of these tickets are available on maps MS+CH which allows travel via Crewe.

You would, however, need a route ANY PERMITTED ticket, not the cheaper route ALTRINCHAM one.

If you look at the printed departure board at Chester is shows options for Manchester by changing at Crewe.

Also note that a Chester-Stockport ticket is valid for Chester-Warrington-Manchester-Stockport and is slightly cheaper than a Chester-Manchester route:Any Permitted ticket.

Agreed. It could also allow Chester-Crewe-Wilmslow-Manchester-Stockport, but you would need to make sure your Crewe-Wilmslow-Manchester section didn't pass through Stockport (I believe there's one stopper per hour on the Manchester Airport route, which is the way you would need to go).
