I noticed this morning that the 'down slow to down fast' crossovers at Stoats Nest Junction (Purley, Surrey) are now disconnected. Is this connection now defunct, and, if so, why?

Interesting as the only points signed out of use are 1667 points between the up and down quarry lines preventing moves from up quarry to up slow. Down slow to down quarry has been used today as there was a points failure at Redhill.

In that case it's likely it was that connection that had been severed, and a short length of rail had been removed. The rest of the crossing set was certainly very rusty. I'll try to look again next week (daylight). Why has the up connection been removed?

Wasn't there a broken rail a few weeks ago which necessitated an emergency repair that ended up removing part of a crossing, or am I imaging that?

Yes there was and the route I mentioned was signed out of use on 5/12/16

I'm very familiar with Stoats nest Junction at the moment, with what can be done and what can not be done and only the points I said are OOU.

For those living in East Surrey - I used to - Purley is in Surrey. London begins at Croydon. Mind you, Surrey folk can be parochial. Derek (75-ish), who lived opposite me said one day - in a lowered tone - of his wife, "she's not from around here (Redhill) you know". "Really" I replied, not having ever noticed anything "foreign" in her accent.
"No" he replied, "she's from Coulsdon".

For those of a geographically challenged bent, Coulsdon is a village about five miles away.

Agreed. Even Croydon (the London Borough, no less) is described as Croydon, Surrey, as far as addresses go.

I have friends who live in Harold Wood on the TfL line out in Essex, but technically they live in the London Borough of Havering. But it's always termed as being in Essex.

The other one that springs to mind is - to cite what's even written on tickets sold there! - Sutton (Surrey), despite being a London Borough also.

All open to a never-ending discussion that I've had many times before!

If Croydon is in Surrey, then so is Purley. But they're not, they're in London.

Purley is in Surrey as far as addresses are concerned.

Postal counties were abolished in 1996. There is no need to include the county when sending mail. The post town and postcode is all that is needed.

FWIW - Over here in the US of A, most people may not even know what county they live in except maybe down south of the Mason-Dixon line. We never use it in addresses. In Kentucky here we do have it on our license plates and we better know what county our car is registered for plates and titles and such. [FYI - in Kentucky we also have to pay annual property taxes on our cars - unlike Ohio, etc.]
BTW - I lived in Kent (Margate) as a child, but quite a few folks called it the Isle of Thanet. [Yes, I know the history].

There's an article on London Reconnections about this mindset and how it led to Epsom being outside London, and therefore outside TfL's domain. With the Secretary of State representing Epsom this may have led to the TfL takeover of rail being torpedoed.
