Hello all,

Does anybody have any information regarding the various signal boxes at Stirling railway station.

In particular, I would like to know about the north box. Would like to know opening hours, shift lengths and trains p/h if possible.

Currently Stirling Middle & Stirling North. Middle is now the largest "mechanical" box in Scotland, although all the points are power operated and signals colour light and Ground Position Light, albeit operated from the frame. There is also a panel that controls the Kincardine line as far as Kincardine. It operates to Edinburgh Signalling Centre by Track Circuit Block on the Larbert line, TCB to Longannet on the Kincardine line, and Absolute Block to Stirling North on the Perth line.

Stirling North was originally larger than Middle when it controlled the junctions to the Forth and Clyde Junction Railway to Balloch and the line to Alloa. All the main running signals are now colour light, but the points are mechanical and there are still some shunting discs.

Both are now open 24/7, although until a few years ago North switched out on a Sunday. I'm not sure about the shift pattern or TPH, but regular passenger services from Edinburgh-Dunblane and Inverness, Glasgow-Alloa, Aberdeen & Inverness and the daily LNER Highland Chieftain from Kings Cross to Inverness, plus the Inverness sleeper. A few freights - the Tesco containers from Mossend to Inverness daily, for example.

From The Signal Box website, although a bit dated Stirling Middle

No it isn't. It doesn't even make the top five.

No, it works Track Circuit Block to Dunblane.
Amended - apologies. I shouldn't rely on my memory! I hadn't known about the change to TCB. I asked (on this forum) some time ago if it was still Intermediate Block working to Dunblane and was told it was AB! I see that the change to TCB must have occured earlier this year, going by the latest Sectional Appendix.

Going back quite a long time, there was a Stirling South. It closed, I think, late 1960s or early 1970s (I will check). On the Balloch line there was Stirling New Bridge (named after the nearby road bridge over the Forth - new as in built in the 1820s, as opposed to the old bridge which is 15th or 16th century). This box closed when the Balloch line eventually completely closed in the early 1960s.

That’s great info, thanks!

Are both boxes single manned or does middle have more signallers due to its size?

As far as I know North is single manned, and Middle is double manned, one for the frame and one for the SAK (Stirling-Alloa-Kincardine) panel. I'm not sure if there are two on nights, as there are no longer coal trains since Longannet Power Station closed in 2016. Longannet signal box is only opened as required. All passenger traffic to and from Alloa is controlled entirely from Stirling Middle - it doesn't need Longannet to be open.

There's some photos of Stirling Middle before electrification here: https://canmore.org.uk/site/317769/stirling-railway-station-middle-signal-box?display=image and https://tillyweb.biz/gallery/ss/stirlingmiddle.htm

Some photos of Stirling North before the Alloa line openened here: https://tillyweb.biz/gallery/ss/stirlingnth.htm

And a photo of Stirling Middle relatively recently: https://x.com/NetworkRailSCOT/status/1354761641838194690
Good photos. The last one is following the conversion to power points and colour light signalling - note the shortened working levers.

What is/was the Alloa to Kincardine part used for, or what was it used for?

I assume that the change in signalling between Stirling and Dunblane was associated with the addition of a facing crossover immediately S of Dunblane Station, allowing trains to depart from the loop platform.

Yes; AB to TCB conversion and the new trailing crossover were brought into use on 05/02/24.

As a matter of interest, which are the others?
Stirling Middle - 96 levers
Arbroath - 72 levers
Dunblane - 60 levers
Stranraer Harbour - 56 levers
Montrose North - 51 levers
Stirling North - 48 levers

Merry go round trains to Longannet Power Station. Until the opening of the SAK line, they had to be routed over the Forth Bridge, which limited tonnage.

Another change in the signalling (although earlier) was the conversion of Cornton No 1 crossing from AHB to MCB (OD). This required extra signals.

Thanks for that....very interesting!
Added to my memory bank!
