Stevenage to Newcastle routing/pricing question

Can a return ticket be used from Stevenage to Newcastle travelling via Leeds on the outbound? If yes, how long can the 'break' be in Leeds? I understand (I think) that if I arrive in Leeds after the last train to Newcastle has left I can stay overnight and resume the next day. Can I stay longer, say 1-2 days? To be clear, the return will be direct.

I'm not looking to use Advance Singles on this trip. A certain degree of flexibility is needed.

Map TY defines the valid routes for "any permitted" tickets, which include via Leeds (https://data.atoc.org/routeing-maps):

However, most tickets are valid on one day only outbound, with the caveat you mention.
An anytime return for £304 will be valid for 5 days outbound (https://www.brfares.com/!faredetail...pert=on&flow=3&multi=1&fare=4&rte=700&tkt=SOR). If you buy this one you have the flexibility you want but with the cost. If you buy a "saver" return you'll not be able to travel on later days with the exception you mention.

The Outward portion of an Off Peak Saver can be used for an overnght stop in Leeds. However, onward travel would have to be on the following day (preferably earlier in the day) and, please note, not all rail staff (and I would imagine zero ticket gates) are aware of this rule so you need to stand your ground to get the validity accepted. The wording that goes with these fares is a little ambiguous and few people make use of this validity. The return leg can involve as many stopovers and breaks as you like, provided that all travel is complete by the end of the one month validity period and none of it involves going 'backwards'.

What I would suggest doing if you need to stay in Leeds longer than a single ticket will allow is to buy a ticket from Stevenage to York and Finish short at Leeds, then buy a ticket from Leeds to Newcastle. On your return journey you would then use the return portions of the two tickets in combination. This would mean your train would need to stop at York but afaict the vast majority of ECML services do.
